Re: In-person meeting to tour facility after interview

This was a long time ago with an ATC application. They arranged a tour for me and said to call in when it was finished to let them know when I had done a tour. I did the tour (ACC and nearby tower), and called in the next day at work. It ended up being a full interview by phone. I wasn't prepared, b...

Re: Life/Housing in Yellowknife/Whitehorse

When I was in YZF I was in a 2 bedroom apartment that was rented from another company. Cost be around $800 a month all in, and it was deducted from my pay biweekly. The going rate for the place was around $1600 a month plus utilities, so it was quite a good deal. Now Nav owns some units and I think ...

Re: VFR in Yellowknife??

OFP and the old salary tables are in the agreement just in case they are needed for calculations. There may be some people still on those salary scales. The info of who is paid what is not published because it does change with review. My advice to you is when applying to not worry about the salary d...

Re: Calgary / Springbank Tower Positions!!

Can't speak to YBW, but YYC has had 5 ab-initios in the last 10 years. So it's rare, but does happen. All 5 qualified, but Nav Canada won't put you in a position to fail in your initial post. If you don't get the location you want, go qualify in the assigned post. Then you can bid to your desired si...

Re: VFR in Yellowknife??

YZF has company housing provided that you may use. I was up there 10 years ago but I paid $700 (utilities included) a month for a 2 bedroom apartment and 3 bedroom townhouses were $1050 a month. Looking at the current rates its $780 for an apartment and $1266 for a townhouse. If you choose to live i...

Re: Regional Airline Pilot to IFR Controller, worth the switch?

ATC is not the best job in the world. Yes it is good pay but after doing the job for 5 years it becomes very mundane and boring. If you want to work long hours with very little job satisfaction then ATC is for you... If you find it mundane and boring transfer specialties. There's always a new chall...

Re: Calgary / Springbank Tower Positions

Hello YYC controller here, YBW and YYC need controllers like all other units eventually do. I can't speak for YBW, but YYC will take the occasional ab-initio controller. We've had 5 ab-initios in the last 10 years, where in that time we've taken ~20 seniority bids in as well. So it's rare, but not u...

Re: Why do YWG and YEG hold more assessment sessions?

The turnover isn't so much people resigning and leaving the company. There are people that bid to other units, retire, or go on parental leave etc. The tough part is that not everybody can do the job and it takes a lot of resources to get a licensed controller through all the training. Specialty/Uni...

Re: Departure freq in the clearance?

Not sure why we don't, but we don't. YYC Departures off 35L, 17R, 29, 26 = 124.52 Departures off 35R, 17L, 08, 11 = 119.8 EXCEPTION: If you are departing off a runway not compliant with our ground sort . Most common example is you are going to the oil patch (AVROM or SAXOL) and ask for 35L for depar...

Re: VFR or IFR

Yes absolutely. But it does mean that you will likely have to move away from the city that the ACC is in. But if you are able to do that then it's well worth it.

Re: Your first T4 over $100k was when you had....

While salary starts around 60k at smaller towers, there is also ATC Premium, weekend and evening premiums, and overtime. I made 100k in my first full year of ATC (tower) but a lot of that was from taxable income from isolated post housing. Sure beat renting a room in a trailer for $800 a month!

Re: Curious about a career with Nav Canada as a Controller

The pension is still DB (Defined Benefit), just a different DB pension now.

The shift work isn't bad, and remember that you need less people for midnight shifts so you work less of them than day/evening shifts.

You rotate through the positions and are qualified to work every position in a tower

Re: Question About Training Offer

Important stuff would be types of airspace (even boring stuff like control area extensions and typical heights of those), a bit of the radio theory, weather, types of IFR approaches etc. When I went through 8 years ago we touched on theory of flight and other things non-atc related, but there was so...

Re: Question About Training Offer

I've never heard of someone not being offered a job. They won't run a course unless they need people, and if you think of the overall cost to train people, they don't really do it just to burn money.

Re: Class D Airspace

Yep, what oxi said. What I was taught when working in a class D zone tower (with no surrounding terminal) was that if GABC calls and you say "GABC, stand by" that you can expect them to come into the zone. If you want them to stay out of the zone, you have to specifically say "GABC, remain outside o...

Yes, but my time is off by 2 hours and 9 minutes. My clock is accurate and I'm not in a shack in Grise Fjord. It should be the exact same as my computer clock.
