Re: Landing on the lake technique

There are lots of factors to consider ... Time of year (water temp) location (time to rescue, boats in the immidiate area) size and type of trees and density of the forest. I don't think there is one right answer to this question ... Lots of different views tho and that makes for interesting discuss...

Re: Landing on the lake technique

The Caravan has a ditching procedure in its POH. It has been quite some time since i read it but the jist of it is this... Fly the A/C on to the water. No flair, constant rate of decent. (i believe 300 fpm was their number but i have to double check.) The theory is that if you land on the water main...

Re: Maybe if TC Made / Allowed This Here...

The only problem i see is getting a recent/reliable altimeter setting for the lake. The regs are not just for the turbine engine ... there are lots of other components that an airplane must have for singlepilot ifr. (I dont see a bush operator making their -2 or b-18 for that matter 2 crew just to g...

Re: Blown Tire...to abort or continue prior to V1

This may have been covered in this post already if so disregard. If you have a blown tire you must also consider what other damage has been done. Has a retread come off and damaged your hydrolics... will your flaps or ailerons be effective. Also have the flying peices of rubber damaged other control...

Re: 5% Rule with Floats

I have never heard of any 5% rule. I know our otter's gross increases by 365lbs when on floats. This is due to the amount of weith the landing gear can take. On amphibs our MTOW is lower on wheels then when operating off the water. Same thing goes with the caravan.

Re: Africa contract

As far as the tax break goes I beleive that it is that you have to work outside of Canada for a period no less than 6 months. Then the money you make during those 6 months (or greater) is tax free. Which means if you are working for a Canadian company then when you file for your income tax you apply...

Re: DHC-2T vs DHC-3T

The DHC-2T I'm familiar with burns 245 lb/hr at 123 KIAS at all altitudes. 3620 empty, 5730 MTOW with belly tanks, 6000 with full tips, if I remember correctly. Sweet machine, particularly with the Alaskan door mod. Those are pretty much the numbers that the Transwest -2T is aswell. It is and origi...

Re: Blade Latches C208 Float Plane

Yeah Dave really good post. If i could add 2 points. When docking the 208, the exaust actually puts out about 35 ft/Lbs of thrust. So be ready for that tail to move away from the dock if you are sitting there for more than a few seconds. Once you have the A/C where you want it shut down and tie up. ...

Re: Twin Otter combi ops

No but when loading a Caravan on floats the cockpit doors are almost always blocked off from the rest of the cabin either by luggage and the cargo bulkheads. . Doesnt the bulkhead have to come out of the Caravan on floats? Nope - Not that i am aware of. At least none of the ones i have seen have ha...

Re: Twin Otter combi ops

Cannonballer: Did i mis-interpret or will this also hinder the way Caravans and Otters are loaded as well as the DHC-6? I don't think the issue is quite the same for the Caravans and DHC-3 single Otters, because these two aircraft don't have four exits in the cabin. No but when loading a Caravan on...

Is it really that big of a deal how other ppl talk? You talk the way you want and if you want to sound like a hick or if you throw some funny phase into your comms who cares. My pet peeve is people beating a dead horse or nitpicking other people apart. As long as you do your job professionally let t...

Re: Granny Gas

One thing i noticed nobody touched on was in rough condidtions (on water)is what if the aircraft became airborn prematurly... is it better to let it settle in those big waves or swells or to drop another 10 degrees and keep flying ... ill go with door number 2 everytime. The other thing is if you lo...

Re: Granny Gas

How about a glassy water take off in a fully loaded Cessna 180/185/206? Is it better to use 20 degrees of flap to break the water surface tension or is it better to remain at full power waiting for that extra few knots of speed hoping the thing will break free? Or a Caravan on rough seas for that m...
