Re: Belgian plane crash involving parachutists leaves 11 peo
well, I'm not a Porter pilot, but I think I can explain the barn wall theory... The PC6 has a high idle setting on the engine, and so when flight idle, (Beta) is selected the propeller goes in to flat pitch at a high rpm and creates a great amount of drag, which some would describe is like hitting a...

the Porter does have a time limit on the wings. 15000 hours rings a bell, but I could be wrong.

Re: Golden, BC
My old man used to commute from Golden to Calgary, even bought a Toyota Supra for the trip. Far as I can remember, he was pretty successful, mind you, he had his own plane as a back up if the Highway was closed.
Golden is a great town to live in, worth the commute for sure.

Re: Leaning for take off High DA, float plane
If you want the most of your engine for take off... when your on the lake you are departing from, go to full t/o power and lean till you peak, and then go rich a couple twists, once airborne, I'd richen her up a little more for the climb. If you're operating out of short , high lakes, what I do is b...

Re: What would be a good high performance floatplane to buy?
Those are quite the requested requirements! The PC6, will give you the STOL, but won't do 130 kts on floats, Turbo Beaver will give better STOL, (given the higher power rating of the engine), and probably better cruise than the Porter as well, but I doubt 130 kts. Caravan will give you the speed and...

Re: Aerobatics in a Champ
oh, let me clarify my earlier post.... I only say to be leary of pulling Gs with a wooden spar is because you've probably not had the fabric off the wings and had a good look at the spar. Having not done that you have no idea what's in there.. I've seen a couple scary wooden spars hiding underneath ...

Re: Aerobatics in a Champ
I've done some loops and rolls and such in my families Champ 7GCB. Ours has a metal spar though... if it still had the wooden spar, I would think twice about pulling any kind of Gs.. Roll rate is not all that fast, and loops are slow going, even with an 0-320. But good fun it is!!

Re: 5600 LB Gross Weight Increase for DHC-2
Viking holds the STC you're asking about... come to think of it, I think Wipline has a 5600 up gross mod too. A few more rivets in the wings, lifetime struts, and many many dollars worth of paperwork

I've had my skyhawk for 14 years, and with all the abuse I've put it through, it hasn't missed a beat the whole time.... on the other hand, my wifey bought me a new eco-drive last year, and it was dead within 6 ,months. Took it down to the local Citizen dealer who promptly sent it away for fixin'.

Re: BC Plane Crash - Nakusp
Unfortunately, it looks like a glassy water landing. With a lake that large, you need to basically do an instrument approach from 200 feet, 250-300 fpm down, perfect attitude and adjust power to maintain descent rate, at touchdown , power off and controls back a known amount for the A/C. Its an eas...
