Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread

The nagging question to me is........... If the winds and weather were as bad as they were and they were flying an unpressurized aircraft over such high terrain.............why would they depart in the first place and if they were having difficulty maintaining altitude etc would a 180 degree turn b...

Re: Float operations in fast flowing river

Not too much to worry about on landing. If you land into the current you will have less ground (water) run after touchdown. If you land down current you will cover more water than normal to come off the step. Sometimes more than you think. Make sure you do a good inspection before you land so you do...

Re: Ground at Wasaya or Transwest?

I still have to shake my head. Those of us who have accomplished what we wanted to accomplish in this career choice have no right to stand on a pedestal and judge those coming up the ladder behind us. You have a good career Doc, but don't stand there and tell these kids that are trying to make in in...

Re: Ground at Wasaya or Transwest?

Where to begin? Apparently this has become another "bash Wasaya thread" lead by none other than Doc and whoever the sweet f!%k Brown Bear is. Here is the truth. There is a bond. If you don't like it, move on. The reason there is a bond is because less than half of you out there are good for your wor...

Re: B24 Liberator

You want some interesting stuff on the B-24, read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It's about an American who crashes in the South Pacific and spends over a month in a life raft before being taken prisoner by the Japanese. Great book, good history and some good stuff on the Liberator. True story too.

Crew did the right thing. 12000 feet of runway, put her down straight ahead. Now if we could only get them to use the same common sense with their radio calls...

Re: Quitting float flying for the IFR world

Don't listen to anyone who says you stayed on floats too long. I had close to 6000 hrs on floats when I made the jump to the IFR world. Your low level, low vis experience from the float world will put you head and shoulders above the other f/os who came from instructing or working their way off the ...

Re: Do Twin Otters Have Autofeather?

On the airplane I fly it's active all the time. There's no turning it off. If the torque drops below a certain point with the throttle above a certain point, it automatically autofeathers. It also disables the other engine from autofeathering.

Re: Autopilots may dull skills of pilots, committee says

I don't doubt the results of the study but in my experience as a check pilot, I've seen a lot more problems with pilots who did not know what the fancy Auto-Pilot was doing because they didn't spend enough time using it to operate the plane. We lost a Cormorant due to this. Catch 22 I guess. More f...

No shit. They didn't need a study to figure that out.

Re: Can a city boy become a bush pilot?

Yes, it can be done. As long as you leave your southern attitude and preconceived ideas about the people up here down south. I did it. I would say I had a little more experience than you. Having done a lot of camping and fishing when I was younger. But I had never held a gun, owned a snow machine or...

Re: How do I get a gun?

The POL does not exist anymore. It was only for a short time so that those who already owned guns could continue to own them when they switched from the old FAC. The PAL is fairly quick and easy. Get the book, which you can download for free here. http://www.firearms-safety-course.com/ The site also...

If you are holding for any length of time, please do not park on the pad. You're not the only one using the airport.
That is all.

Free long distance calls.

Found this and I've been using it. www.knctr.com. Free local and long distance calling from your computer, and unlike skype, you can call cell phones and land lines. Works best if you have a headset on your end though. This isn't a spam post, I just thought that all you guys and girls who are spread...

who's transcanada? Regional1 airlines is the short answer... the A/C they are flying is a DH8 painted in the colours of a certain YQT based native joint venture partnership airline that is leasing the A/C (buying in the future?) but does not yet have their 705 operation up and running, so can't ope...

Re: Driving in Mexico

I drove from Toronto to Panama as well. We crossed at Nogales, Texas, which felt sketchy as hell, but turned out to not be that bad. We took the road down the pacific coast. Beautiful country and you have the added bonus of missing Mexico City. People were amazingly friendly. The beach is public lan...
