Re: Caravan engine failures
The bleed air valve begins to open when Ng goes below about 90%, if I remember right. When the inertial separator is pushed in it can be quite difficult to do at high power settings. Many people will ease back on the power to make it easier to close and save on knuckle skin. By doing this the Ng cou...

Latest Hiring numbers for 2011
Does anyone have the latest info on how many pilots westjet will hire this year?
I heard 130 from someone, and no more from someone else.

Re: Flying the Caravan in Canada.
I believe you need 1000hrs to fly SPIFR with passengers. If you've got that then you should apply where you want to work. Of course there are few operators that will set you loose unless you have some IFR experience as a copilot.

Re: IFR alternate
If a TEMPO is below alternate requirements for your ETA at alternate, then you cannot use that airport as your alternate. Simple. If the TEMPO is the worst forecast, use that. If the base TAF is the worst forecast, use that. If TEMPO and TAF are above the alternate minima, and there is a PROB, then ...

Re: Question about the Caravan from a weekend warrior.....
For weekend VFR I would say if you can afford to buy, fly and fix a caravan then have at 'er. I wouldn't recommend it as an IFR machine for someone in Canada with 500hrs flying 8 hours a month, but if you're very respectful of your limitations then its not that big a deal.. While its ability in (or ...

Re: Transition Lenses
Thanks for the link to Zenni Optical, it almost seems too good to be true. Its at worst a third of the price. Any ideas how they do it so cheap? Have you ever had any problems dealing with them? I'm sick of getting prescription sunglasses that never seem to have exactly the same prescription as my r...

Re: Jazz pilots contract?
Unitholders email sums the situation up pretty well. Remember, personal feelings aside pilots are a business expense. Nothing more. His point seems to me to be that, if Jazz is not attractive to investors then Jazz is up the creek without a paddle, any company keeps its investors happy first, custom...

Hopefully management will pony up and make Jazz a leader and an example to other Regional airlines in other parts of the world.

Good luck to all the people at Jazz.

DOC just couldn't stop
I am curious why the thread about Jazz overruning 'Jazz.....just couldnt get it stopped' was locked. I realise its an embarrassing incident for anyone involved and there may have been many factors leading up to the end result, but if so many pilots study it in CRM it would be good if someone could e...

Re: Peter Shewring, Canadian aviation icon, passes on
I met Peter this year at an ATPL course. I had heard all the good things about him and the course. I was not dissappointed. Mostly though I left the course with a desire to be a better, safer and more knowledgable pilot. Or in Peters words. 'Be a profesional.' I have spent more time studying and lea...

Re: Ahhhh YYC sometimes you just have to laugh.
I for one would rather be delayed on the ground than in the air. Since Vancouver took over the flow I still get crossing time restrictions and holds in the air after being delayed in the ground (although admittedly maybe a little less than before). The controllers in Terminal/Ctre airspace do a good...
