Training timelines
I'm doing a bit of a survey here, so bear with me. I need to know the timeline that is required for a civilian AME working on M2 cat aircraft, how long it takes from being a green apprentice to being fully type certified (airframe and engines) and being confident to sign off the maintenance release ...

Fresh out of school? Dont even bother trying to get your foot in the door. They only take guys with years of experience. My friends brother works there, I've never heard of them taking on apprentices.

Re: Removing exhast discoloration
First off, what kind of exhaust is it? Piston or Turbine?
Around the shop we have stuff called Precision Clean and Aerowash, that works really well on both. For the harder caked on turbine exhaust stains, a little acetone on a rag or a white scotch-brite pad seems to work well.

Re: More jobs, Pilots or Maintenance???
If you are considering doing tours as a pilot in remote locations, why dont you just go on a rotation up north? I know a guy who lives in new-brunswick and went on tours with Northright and Air Inuit, never heard him complain about lack of jobs. This line... all the nice cars at the hanger, "oh yeah...

Re: aircraft mechanics in quebec
The Exeltech death has most likely flooded an already saturated market with experienced people. No wonder. And that's only one piece of the puzzle. But I think I see what part of your problem is. You complain about aircraft maintenance, but you seem to be eyeing aircraft construction. You arent look...

Yes, he still took my application, though I'm being processed as an AVS (Avionics) as a semi-skilled applicant. Since the AVN is closed he said that I could still be processed and during my interview and PLA I may get ported over. Doesnt matter to me really. Apparently the best time to go if you wan...

Re: Civvy to Military AMEs
Hey Skyu: Until you take the aptitude test at a recruiting center, papers generally mean diddly squat to the CF. I did mine this morning and was informed that AVN Tech's were closed for the year. The recruiter told me that as I had a diploma from a reputable school and experience in hand, he may be ...

Ron, things have changed. They no longer accept college level education for officer jobs. Unless there are exceptions, they only take a Bachelors as a minimum now. Believe me, I asked. Partsboy, thanks for the advice. I'm not concerned about the BS of it, what I am concerned with is my current fitne...

You guys must have a hamfisted way of lockwiring because I have the diamond patterned jaw reversible twisters, as do most of the guys in the shop I work with and have never encountered any problems with lockwire breaking, or nicking, or "stress points". The only time I've run in to these sorts of pr...

SeptRepair, I think the best place to find that info is in the forces website. Also if you know anyone in the forces just ask around. My parents know someone who was an intructor in the forces and I talked to him for a bit about BT. He told me that they have different criteria for those above 35 yea...

I went to school in the building where they are based. One of our teachers had us take a tour of their machines for the Helicopter course. I got to talk to a few of the guys working there, but they were mostly avionics techs as far as I could see. I didnt get to talk to them much as I had to follow ...

Hey guys, thanks for the input. That is exactly my plan fel, to have the license in my pocket for when I get out. Do you have any schooling? Or did you do the ICS home course? Most schools offer some sort of accreditation, usually 18 months. The ICS thing does not.
In either case, you can go write your exam 6 months before the end of your apprenticeship.

Do they guarantee that you would be fixing A/C. Or would you be wrenching on a LAV3 I'd be signing up for AVN TECH, which is the same as an AME. So to answer plainfixer, according to the website they only have 3 aviation maintenance related trades, Avionics, Mechanic and Structures tech. From what ...

Have any of you done it? I went to the recruiters office today because I've always been interested in doing military service. I'm currently an M1 engineer, getting 46k a year. The recruiter hinted that I may be given a signing bonus and / or being accepted in at higher rank with my qualifications. A...

If you completed your High School Diploma in Quebec, most likely when you show up to enroll in a high school in another province to "finish it again", they're probably going to laugh at you. I should know, I spent most of my life going from one provincial education system to another (army brat)... Y...

I currently work on Diamond DA20C-1's, with Continental IO-240B engines. For one, they are incredibly simple aircraft. They are not difficult aircraft to work on. There are some things on them that you go "who's the brain dead engineer that thought of this stupid thing?" but what aircraft doesnt hav...

While I can pick myself up from this, AME jobs in that area are really hard to come by. This is in the maritimes BTW. The airports there are pretty small and there arent that many places where I could go. My wife is already looking and has found a few interesting job offers in her sector, and I'd be...

Leaving your current job to hop to an interview...
Do employers find that weird? Or hard to believe that someone would do that? Let me explain the situation. I've been working as an apprentice AME out of an AMO in Montreal which I wont name. Basically, I got tired of the bull that went on there, and the power trip that the supervisors seem to have t...
