Re: Saving fuel any way they can
Believe it or not, the Twin Otter is one of only a few airplanes where shutting down one engine actually does help your chances. The charts support this hypothesis, in that the loss in cruise speed is actually less than the single engine fuel savings at maximum continuous power, so your specific air...

Re: Wind turbines around airports
They give off an amazing amount of wake turbulence, about the same as a 737. Use caution flying downwind of one. As a student pilot, my Instructor and I inadvertently practised a forced approach in a field downwind of a wind turbine. We thought we were far enough away, but having a 172 almost flip ...

Re: Full flap/specialty landings - 172
Huh, at Springbank, I always land long (between 5000 and 7000 feet) on their 10,000 footer. 100% of the time, as I pass the 2000 foot mark ATC pops up with "BZX, are you planning a go around?" Now, would that be the 5000' or 3400' 10,000 footer? I can certainly understand Tower's need for clarifica...

Re: Angle of attack in a climbing turn
@DanWEC - thank you, all true, but that's for level flight. I'm interested in how things change from level flight when you consider a climbing or descending turn. @Gustind - thanks also. Very helpful. Assuming you are in a constant climb or descent, with no acceleration other than that caused by th...

Didn't notice this at the time, but you can also still see the science racks installed inside the aircraft. Note the glass dome and probes for air sampling on top of the aircraft. I've flown that particular aircraft on several occasions, never painted like that!

Re: Embraer reveals vision for single-pilot airliners
The "pilot" as we think of them today will be different. They will essentially be a systems monitor. This equates to about two minutes of actual hands on flying per flight, with the rest of the flight devoted to monitoring systems. While I agree that today's airline pilot is essentially a systems m...

Re: Qustion/Test for Taildragger Pilots
Interesting question, I had never put much thought in to Vmcg in a crosswind. My answer however would depend on the aircraft, so the following will be in reference to that. In the one I currently fly, Vmcg is well below V1, so a failure of the critical engine would still result in an aborted takeoff...

What JC is refering to is that in the PICUS program (for our company, as stated in the Operations Manual), for the candidate to occupy the left seat, while acting as Pilot In Command Under Supervision, there must be no paying passengers on board the aircraft. However, you can still credit time in th...

Re: Black and white horizons
Maybe there is something wrong with the training industry these days if pilots do not understand the basics of flying? I would agree that there is a serious deficiency in the training industry, I would even go so far as to say there is a disconnect between the theory taught and the actual practice ...

Re: Black and white horizons
Yes. Would a pilot not trained in aerobatics, in the spur of the moment, realize? I understand pilot training (think waaay back) includes unusual attitudes, but for a pilot only trained in the basics, rolling the wings level and pulling back wouldn't quite cut it if you were to rely solely on the a...

Re: Black and white horizons
I'm also curious as to why you would consider the black and white attitude indicators to "no longer be legal". I searched through the CARs, and can't find any standard definining what markings or colours are required to be found on an attitude indicator. Personally, I would like very strongly to see...

I unfortunately only caught the last 30 minutes of Extra Time...even in that time I was frustrated at best by the play, and the officiating...Great play by our women's team, but they were robbed. Still playing for Bronze, but this is a team that should have been playing for Gold.

Re: Could I Have Been Wrong?
In my opinion, whether or not you felt morally obligated, I believe your CP's policy is completely wrong. When I flew medivac, it was standard procedure that the pilots never be told what the flight was for..."here is your destination, can you go?". That aside, we always found out. I believe the CAR...

Re: Winter Aircraft Handling
I've heard stories of an IL-76 landing at Patriot Hills (Antarctica) one particularly nasty day. On touchdown, the aircraft spun a full 180, and rather than panic an freak out, the (presumably) Russian captain calmly took the engines out of reverse and pushed them forward to stop...then of course th...
