Re: R-985 operation and leaning.
Another point to consider is that the 985 carburator was originally set up to burn 80/87 fuel. Back in the early 80's ?? the OH shops started to put a bit bigger main jet in the carb to add a bit more fuel at take off for additional cooling, as the 100/130 burned somewhat hotter. This caused the fue...

Re: Twin crash Powell river
From my experience as a maintenance provider having worked on many Piper twin products in the past, I would say they were leaned out for max fuel economy, just above the "lean" marking, but not at Idle cut off, both in the exact same configuration. And with regards to the props, both were in the fin...

Re: Twin crash Powell river
The blades on the RH engine were significantly bent backwards, banana shape consistent with engine developing power, the LH blades only exhibited tip curl, rotating, but no power.

Re: Twin crash Powell river
First, I'd like to express my sincere condolances to family and friends involved. There must be a general lack of info about this crash on line and I must say I am bothered by the circumstances of this accident. I did not know the pilot, but I know people that did. The news sayes TSB is investigatin...

Re: Seair DHC-2 loses it's prop
I know of a couple of instances with 985's where the crankshaft harmonic ballance weights siezed up, in both cases a powersection internal web was cracked, one was the front, the other was the back web, and were caught finding metal in the screen prior to complete engine failure. The interesting par...

Re: what is going to happen if WJ does the regional thing?
As the boomers keep retirng the challange of finding qualified experienced people in the maintenance departments of the smaller operators (already a challange) will only get worse from here on in. The old attitude of just hire more engineers doesn't work so well anymore. Now add to that an outfit li...

Re: NT Air King Air Accident - Pilot Discussion Thread
I use to work on XRX many years ago, and I must say that back in the day it was a good aircraft, with way fewer "snags" than other 100's operated by our company at the time. As a maintenance provider I would have to say that the chain of events that lead to this tragedy should be of upmost importanc...

Re: Fabric paint touch up, help required
So fixing up your fabric really all depends on what products it was covered/finished with in the first place- too bad this site tends to get off topic really fast. Really doesn't do anything for restoring your finish does it???? If you know what its covered with- Dope Randolph products, Stits, or ot...

Re: Cost of doing business
Its a real catch 22 situation- in the real world private owners wouldn't dream of all the life overhaul schedules in the manual- 800 hr OH on a 985- get real. Operators by law need to have access to current manuals, and overhaul components time should be approved on their own maintenace schedule app...

If your good at what you do stick too it-fixing aircraft. If you don't know anything about running a business be prepared for an extremely steep learning curve. The tools, manauls, and procedures are easy if you know about maintenace already from experiance with your current or past employers. What ...

Re: Past TBO - frequency of inspections
Airframes are like energizer bunnies, they keep on going with relatively non eventful inspections, replace parts when they become worn and keep on going. Engines on the otherhand CAN be particularly troublesome. For example a lycoming engine run regularly with good maintenace, regular inspections an...

Re: TCCA Issues Undocumented Parts Rule Exemption
If you think you can't be sued for doing your job properly and within the rules- think again. Anytime someone is killed or even hurt in an accident the shotgun approach by lawyers will implicate you on some level. Lawyers seam to be able to hire "experts" to support any point of view they wish to ta...

Re: Problems with Paint Job
I've been involved in painting aircraft for a lot of years, and have seen a lot of problems. Yours looks like the shop was using unfiltered air in their paint gun, with an oil belching compressor. Either that or it was wipped of with dirty rags. You say is was a reputable shop, but was it an autobod...

Nice to see the last couple of pages being productive and a real learning experiance. Been in the industry for over 30 years now, and what I see all around, is the young guys learning the same things over again, making the same old mistakes, wheather in flying or maintenance. No amount of systems, m...

My son in law is a red seal industrial pipe fitter- makes big bucks when working- union jobs, but is out of work more than on and is barly making it FWIW. Big industry is not what it use to be. I'd look seriously at how much work there is in the pipe fitting trade- certainly is a huge shortage of qu...

I fully support CYA comments by CBSW: for what its worth, even if you do nothing wrong, and aircraft you are flying as a pilot or have worked on as an AME is involved in an accident where someone is hurt or killed, the lawyers will try to find something to hang you with, however insignificant you ma...

Re: Maint. Manuals
Bombardierfixer is correct. Yes anyone can own an aircraft and have an original manual for it, but if it is a Cessna manual you have, you can bet that the manufacture has a more current manual available, infact they send out a revision status list of all their publications on a regular basis. A meme...

My main point that you people seam to have missed is: what do you think an engine failure due to undetected damage due to a prop stike may cost?? A engine tear down for a prop stike inspection not as costly as a full out overhaul. Ask yourself what is your life worth, or that of your customers, should your crankshaft fail next flight, or one 4 years from now. Why have any doubt. get it checked out properly!

Baffle seals are one of those things that a lot of people, including AME's overlook, and become complacent about, the fact that you recognize the need to replace them is a credit to your understanding of you aircraft's cooling system!, I would ask YOUR AME for advice with respect to his recommendati...

Re: Looking for somebody who flies Aero Commander 900
I have had experiance with both the 500 and the 680? piston pressurized a lot of years ago. I was not impressed at all with either aircraft. IMHO they were Rockwell's test bed for a space shuttle! Way too many complicated F'D up systems airframe wise to look after and keep working, very poor access ...
