Re: NavCanada and GPS

Same thing happen in CYVP. I was told the model of LOC they chose does not radiate any BC and the company reasonned that they could replace it with an RNAV. However the new minima for that RNAV aproach have not been authorized for the last 3 years  Also, it did cause an increase of VOR apch f...

Re: FSS and mandatory frequency = just dangerous

I think it is hard to judge the FSS performance without knowing the mix and complexity of traffic there was at the times. However, I would say most FSS do their best to give the best service possible given the procedures (MANOPS) we have to follow and the tools we are given. Our main concern, is to ...

Re: First Air Crash Resolute Bay August 20 2011

So sad. I was shocked when I saw the picture on the paper yesterday. AS an FSS in CYVP, I saw that plane quite a few time and must have worked with that crew quite a few times also so I can't help but feel concerned by this awful accident. All my thought go to the families, friends and coworkers of ...

Re: FSS staffing levels

If you ask me this is a perfect example of short sighted management. A year or so ago with the whole LOS thing, they were trying to get rid of as much FSS as possible and then they went further by encouraging overtime as much as possible and stopping the trainning completely for a long time So the p...

Re: FSS staffing levels

As far as I can tell, they are pretty much where they want to be but somewhat on the understaffed level. I may get a transfer soon but I have been told there is no one available to replace me at my current site. As far as I know they are slowly starting the trainning again with some courses in the w...

Re: A few questions about NavCanada

I think he was referring to the Level of service that was done not too long ago. They finally decided to abandon the whole thing for now. As for the questions asked, I will answer as best as I can from my point of view as an FSS . First the answer will depends on the specialty you choose. FSS VFR an...

Re: NavCanada and GPS

I work with NAARDS in a FSS environment so things may be different for the centers controllers but what ADS-B does is just provide an additional mean to tracks airplanes so if we were to replace radar with it (assuming everybody would be equipped with it), the transition should be transparent to con...

Re: Something I have always wondered

I guess you will get different answers from different peoples. On my part, as an FSS, I would expect the call once the turn is completed joining the final. The main reason I would ask that is to know once you join the final for an update on the wind/traffic. Often people here will say "a call proced...

Hi, Well we are on day 2 actually and still with the wellness and harassment courses so it's not too bad yet. We had our first exam at 6h15 on monday and another one this morning about the cd but it's still experimental so it won't count. I think real courses will begin on thursday so it'll get hard...

Well, I have been accepted to 2 FSS courses and last year, they did not send me the CD but this year they did.

As to why they did not back then, I don't have a clue.
I think it is great to have it in advance, it helps give a headstart.

That should not be a problem since I currently live in Quebec (in Saguenay actually).

I wonder if there is anymore people on the same course as I am on this forum.

Just for information, what exactly the CD is about?

Pour faire une histoire courte, j'avais déja été accepté pour le cours de Novembre 2005 mais j'avais du me désister donc j'ai recu le package l'an dernier. Cependant, je n'ai pas eu de cd donc je ne peut pas etudier ca. (To make a short story, I was accepted last November for the FSS course but got ...

Heading to NCTI (as FSS), Tips before I leave?

Hi, I went through the process and got in on the next bilingual FSS course that takes place next June. I wanted to know what I should study before going so I can get as much headstart as possible. I did the ground school a few times with the air cadets so I know a fair bit of "From the ground up" (M...
