Re: Float Rating or bush course?

I think the reality of the situation is that some people find learning by direct experience to be to their best interest. They can take on the day to day tasks of a field job without much guidance and moreover their instincts are reliable enough to carry them through situations and circumstances tha...

John was fantastic...like a second father actually. He was one of those rare individuals that gave and gave.
I grew up within their family and he was one of the first mentors I ever had...

Re: Flying Fireman (att..)

An old family friend used to work up there, John Thies. Not sure if he worked for QCA though. HE went to become a Firecat pilot for Conair.

Re: Looking for all pilots that flew for the flying firemen

The canso that Frank's owned, C-FOWE is still around and is owned by none other than Connie Edwards who accompanied Frank's on the flight to England in his own PBY...a 6a if I remember correctly... Fowe is now N222FT and is currently airworthy in Texas. I have a recent picture of it somewhere that s...

Re: The Flying Firemen - who were they?

I was reading an article entitled "Cansos over Canada" in which Stan's name was mentioned a few times. Also in that article was an anonymous pilot with a huge number of Cat hours ( Might be you .?)and Sonny Covin among others. The foundation of the article seems to be the sinking and subsequent reco...

Re: The Flying Firemen - who were they?

Thanks .... no one was sure what was wrong with Granddad until the final month of his life and I have often wondered if he did know but decided that the dignity of business as usual was far better than suffering the nonsense of treatment... I don't know this but I wonder sometimes about it. He was p...

Re: The Flying Firemen - who were they?

I think I probably have a different perspective on the Flying Fireman than anyone else could possible have. My Grandfather was the Chief Pilot and was caught in the middle of a lot of this stuff. He was the consummate pilot who certainly commanded the respect of the pilots that I met over the years....

Re: FAO Cat Driver

There have been female pilots of PBY's since the war though how many would be hard to tell... I would be interested to know if PBY's were ferried around by woman like the other bombers and some fighters were.... I have read stories documenting women pilotsof B-24's, Lancs and P-39's but the PBY ferr...

Re: FAO Cat Driver

My uncle was a fighter pilot and a lifer for CP/Canadian and had the occasion to fly an FF cat a time or two and told me it was one of the most challenging aircraft to fly... real Flying he called it.... I am not a pilot but I had a few opportunities to steer an old girl or two around the sky.. rema...
