Re: Red Bull Air Race 2009 - Windsor, Ontario
It would be impossible not to fly in Canadian airspace, the river isn't wide enough. TC chose to ignore the event. This year the course is the same, except the aircraft w...

Re: Complaint to Nav Canada on ATC - worth it?

I wouldn't let it go. If the controller was having a bad day and he's usually good, then it won't be a big problem for him. If he's a habitual offender, it's another one on his file. I work with someone like this. He makes us all look bad. If everyone who complained to me about this controller, comp...

Re: Nepotism

Nepotism in Nav Canada exists, but it's less than the vast majority of companies. I only know of a couple instances where nepotism gave someone a really unfair advantage. If anything, it can be a disadvantage. Upper management in ANY company is going to shoe-in their relatives, but it's harder to d...

Re: Nepotism

At a particular tower near me (not mine) there is a candidate currently training whose father is the UOS at that unit. What do you think the chances are of that guy getting CT'd. How would you like to be the OJI? I know of a certain relative of a higher up who was definitely given several more oppor...

don't you have to go through a lengthy process of calling every unit everywhere and changing the airspace, etc? That's the way our unit is supposed to do it, but seriously, I can be down the stairs do what I need to do and be back to the position in 40 seconds. Plus we have a speaker in the washroo...

If teaching isn't for me i'm not going to screw some kid over just so i can get hours, i'll find a job doing something else. That's the best attitude to have. There is a lot of job satisfaction to be had training pilots, but as you're finding out, it's a lot of work too. Good Luck with the course!

I've got about 5000 hours instructing. I don't do that anymore. It was great while I was doing it. But I got burnt out. If you're logging 140 hours a month instructing you're going to be a basket case in a year. In my experience count on 2 hours at the airport for every flight hour. That makes that ...

Well, one of the things is that I did the interview in french instead of english. French isn't my native language, and there is potential that some of the phrases or words I used might have triggered something. I have already been less than happy with myself for allowing that to happen, and I certa...

I was 38 when I was accepted and 39 when I got my ATC licence. There was one person older than me on my course, and several older in other courses. This was back in 2001 when all the training (IFR and VFR) was done at NCTI. It's my opinion, if you didn't get through the interview process the first t...

I've been a Tower Controller for six years. Before that I accumulated almost 7000 hrs of Commercial flying. No regrets at all. I wish I would have switched sooner. I love this job. I loved flying too, but as I got older other things became more important. Such as...everthing else but flying. I sleep...

So you're saying that if a pilot doesn't ask or say anything about the runway length a "request" for intersection departure is implied? I think that's weak. Show me a MANOPs reference. As far as the pilot looking at a picture the size of a quarter in the CFS and getting useful information about appr...
No that is incorrect. Stating that from "C" cleared take-off runway 18 is not suggesting to take off from "C". You are simply telling them that you are only giving them clearance to take off from "C". Telling them to take an intersection departure that is not at the end of a ...

The only time ATC is required to ask you if you can depart from the intersection is when there is a taxiway that runs full length and they suggest for you to take an intersection departure. Any time you taxi for an intersection on your own, or come to the end of the taxiway and are not at the thres...
