Re: Building Help - Pitot Static model
Well, I'm poking around the hanger for parts, but I've got an ASI, VSI, ALt, and Vacuum gauge. I would like to design something that doesn't require students to wrap their lips around a tube and suck/blow. Currently toying with the idea of using water pressure to simulate dynamic airflow through tub...

Building Help - Pitot Static model
Hi all,
I'm trying to build a working model of a pitot static system for our groundschool (gotta do something while the students have all the fun flying). Was wondering if anyone has tackled this project and would appreciate any ideas/experience.
Cheers

Video Debriefing?
I'm curious if any FTU's currently use an onboard camera for use in debriefing students. I recently did an aerobatics flight on a Harvard in the States and found that reviewing a video post flight, allowed me to catch alot that I had missed while airborne and see what the instructor was ACTUALLY tal...

Temperature difference on a wing?
My curiosity has been peaked when a student asked me "how much colder the top of the wing is vs bottom"? Just wondering if anyone has done the math. I've googled the topic and as far as I've found, a 172 has a 4 degree spread but I'd like to back that up with some solid evidence.

Re: Forced Approach.
On the flight test your forced approach is graded into two categories: Cockpit procedures and Forced approach technique. For the PPL the examiner guide requires the examiner to pull the power no less than 3000' AGL. With this in mind try to fly your aircraft to that point of zero movement. I know th...

Man who fish in other mans well often catch crabs.
Man who keep feet firmly on the ground have trouble putting pants on.
It take many nails to build crib, but only one screw to fill it.

Harper unveils plans to drill in the Arctic?
Just caught a snippet on the news this morning that Canada is going forward with plans to "explore" and drill for oil in the arctic. If so, I'd imagine that all those operators up there are going to get very busy. But at what cost?

Re: Best school for PPL - With instructor shortage?
Maybe give some of these schools a phone call and have a "phone interview" with the CFI. Have a list of questions. ie. Rates, Availability, Groundschool schedule, aircraft, accommodations. Right now my school is getting some students frustrated with their previous schools not having the instructors ...

Re: Human error
I remember watching one of my students doing a walkaround, and he forgot to remove the pitot cover. (and yes, I did teach him how to do a proper walkaround). So I figured he would catch it while we were taxiing . . . he did not. Then I figured he would catch it on the take off roll when he confirmed...

Physiological Training
Does anybody know of facilities near BC that offer any physiological training. I know Selkirk college does theirs down in Spokane but anywhere north of the 49th would make the organization that much easier.

Re: Is instructing looked down that much?
Who would you rather go to the bar and swap stories with? A bunch of heavy drivers talking about how the auto-pilot disconnected and the passenger in seat 12B had too much to drink? Or a group of instructors with stories of sending student's on their first solo, dumping water over their head? It see...

Perhaps someone out there has a little more info on the new TC english proficiency exam. All I know is that as of March, all newly liscenced pilots will undergo an exam for their english proficiency. Is it a verbal or written? And what is the purpose of instituting this? Who admisisters the exams an...

Re: Aerobatics and Taildragger Training YVR Area
Southern Skies has an excellent aerobatics/tail dragger program. The Citabria instructor used to be an airshow pilot in the Belgian Airforce and now flies water tankers in the summer. Loads of experience/knowledge. There is also accomodation provided onsite. Check out their website http://www.southe...

Medical Validity at age 39?
One of my students has asked the question "Is my medical valid for 5 years or 2 if I get it at age 39?" So I've gone over the CARS until my eyes bled, but still could not find the answer! I would suspect that once he hit's 40, he would have two years after THAT until it's expired, effectively making...

I agree that instructor pay is sub-par. However, with the costs that go hand in hand with running an operation (Fuel, Insurance, MAINTAINENCE, and coffee for the pilots) how would a school afford to pay an instructor what they deserve without raising the training costs to the students? The majority ...
