Re: Traffic you cant explain

Nothing really fit the bill and we were both reluctant to call it the U word. I was a little pissed off we couldn't get an answer. By definition, it was a UFO. Don't be scared of it. UFO does not equate to alien flying saucer. One winter evening I saw some bright objects in the sky. They looked lik...

Re: Ethiopian Airlines: 'No survivors' on crashed Boeing 737 max

By far the biggest threat to the Max is the engines - with all the problems they are having - they should have had their ETOPS certification pulled long ago. Of course - you don't hear anyone going on about that. You've downplayed the accidents and defended the MAX saying any MCAS issue the plane m...

Re: Ethiopian Airlines: 'No survivors' on crashed Boeing 737 max

Wow.....talk about an over-reaction from almost everybody. It's the herd mentality at it's worst. Lion Air + Ethiopian = 346 lost souls. Over-reaction? No kidding. Statistically, two crashes in a new aircraft type within 6 months during the same flight regime is grounds for a pause. Purely economic...

Re: Aircraft tie down

The last two times I have been at a "large" Canadian airport, only wheel chocking was possible, if I brought my own chocks, and the sum of the landing and parking fees exceeded $75 for the visit. My small airport experience has been much more favourable, with generally some kind of tiedown points a...

Re: Well, someone has to talk about the 12 hour BTT amdt.

I think the 12 BTT rule is excessive. It punishes responsible drinkers who may want a bottle of beer or a glass of wine at the end of a long day. As has already been mentioned, it seems to target the problem drinkers who drink excessively and show up for work hungover. From my experience, those with...

Re: St. Catherines Flying Club - lawsuit re October 16, 2016 fatal crash

I suspected that the accident pilot was not IFR current as he hadn't done any recent approaches, but it seems he had recently passed an IFR proficiency test (for what that was worth - keeping in mind that you can get and maintain an IFR rating without ever being in a cloud, let alone at night). Aft...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

If the decision is essentially insurance-industry driven, exactly what role does the insurance cover for these events? Great question. It is my assumption that they'd covered incidents related to operating the aircraft. I feel like they'd never even consider paying a settlement for an abuse claim. ...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

I was a volunteer firefighter for more than 15 years when the requirement was applied to us. It did not matter that I'd known the Chief for nearly twenty years, everyone had to have the check done, for the sake of the Fire Department, and one's own piece of mind. The world has done it to itself, so...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

I find the stance by a COPA director on this issue ironic. On 406 ELTs, COPA believes ELTs fail more than they function. And they believe that for many owners ELTs are cost prohibitive. I can't believe you are fighting this COPA! It's about safety! You act like buying an ELT is like giving a kidney....

You don't have a right to volunteer anywhere, on your terms. Don't like it? Run for office. I have been part of several volunteer organizations. Feedback from volunteers is extremely valuable. When they get disgruntled and leave without providing a reason, there is no opportunity to make changes th...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

Indeed. The group insisting on this arguably unnecessary criminal record check (COPA) gets to foot the bill. That's only fair. From my research, it appears that several police services and even some provinces offer free vulnerable sector checks to volunteer organizations. There is still a fee if yo...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

I think criminal record checks should be done for anyone wanting to post on this site. There are undoubtedly student pilots on here under the age of 18. They might be groomed as targets for pedophiles.

Let's think of the children.

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

If you think that it can't happen in this type of situation, you are sadly naive. What cost in keeping children safe? Maybe COPA isn't worried about liability, maybe they're just worried about children Anything can happen anytime. A piece of paper won't stop that. Neither will any amount of money. ...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check

All I had to do was e-sign a consent form. Now that is a bit more reasonable. No cost to the pilot and a couple clicks (minimal hassle). Just make sure the consent scope is limited to something reasonable, such as a criminal records check. Someone is paying for the criminal record check. Do local C...

Pretty standard when you volunteer with kids. I coach hockey and have to do it every year. At first I agreed. I said what's the big deal? But you have to look at the situation and determine the risk: Hockey coaches having access to a change room where kids are in states of undress and potential to ...

Was there an SFOC in place? What does it say? My question was: What is needed to legally attempt a stunt like this? Looks like a SFOC is the answer. I assume what you are planning to do has to be described in detail and proven to be safe? Or do they just give you permission to take an unproven risk?
