Re: how do kids afford this racket???

i remember paying for about 200 hours over 3 years by working 3 nights a week as a busboy then waiter in a restaurant. Lived at home and did not have a car. Was very hard work to get an hour or two each week. i think it worked out to two nights of work for one hour of dual or something like that and...

Re: Idle Mixture

Normally a correct idle mixture will yield a slight RPM increase prior to a drop as you slowly lean to kill a warm engine from about 1000 rpm. I believe Lycoming says 50rpm rise.

If however it rises too much, the idle micture is too rich and if it does not rise enough its too lean.

Re: Hybrid Electric Jet is ready to take-off

Technically its a variable pitch ducted fan not a jet. Specs say ceiling is 25,000 feet. Has a gas turbine generator. 8 cents per pax mile.

I wonder how much it takes to heat/de-ice and pressurize at 25,000 feet? Can't be trivial amount of energy.

Re: Be careful when applying brakes in an old taildragger

"You really don't want to apply brakes when the aircraft is like this(the picture from a different landing)......" Stick and Rudder, Langeweische, page 308, disagrees with this generalization, in fact there is an excellent discussion of very short landing techniques using brakes and two point and th...

If you want GPS you have to buy the cellular version, even if you never connect it to a cell network.
Annoying but the GPS is very good.

Re: to inhibit?

"cgrzo - That won't stop the cam from rusting" True but its most likely better than multi vis in an idle plane. The 2F oil's are 100w ... with a preservative. As far as I know they don't use multi-vis + a preservative in any preservative oil so I assume that the 100w provides better protection than ...

Use a straight weight and pre-heat until toasty warm before flying.

Re: Do you check your killer items just prior to takeoff?

Given that the most likely things to kill you are weather and fuel related its probably a good idea to check both more than a few times before you take-off.

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption

Never assume a new gasket was used:)

Those exhaust nuts need to be retorqued. If not you will soon be pulling the exhaust, redoing the mating surfaces and putting a new gasket in there.

That should be corrected because if the gasket burns out then you have a loose exhaust etc.. Very unpleasant.

Re: Hot start issues

"EI digital tach was installed," That EI tach connects directly to the P-leads where it allows a small amount of current to ground through an "isolator" so that it can measure the pulses and count them. If for some reason the isolator is allowing too much current to flow to ground it will reduce the...

Re: Hot start issues

- How old is the battery. Sometimes even a small difference in RPM at start can make the difference between easy and hard.

- How old is the starter, again if its dropped a bit in RPM due to being worn that can have an impact.

Re: Wheel landing or three point?

You can get very short landing distances 2 point by deaccellerating faster than in 3 point attitude because you can have full weight on the wheels (or more if you push hard). So with proper technique on a dry runway you might be able to outperform a 3 point distance but it requires hard push and ver...

Re: Clearing Turns

Most mid air collisions don't occur between aircraft that are both in level flight. Usually one is climbing or descending into the other. So you really need to think of yourself in three dimensions and look all around and up/down before doing anything that changes your vertical position. For example...

Re: Wheel landing or three point?

The simple trick to avoiding PIO in a two point landing is simply to put one main down slightly before the other. This ensures that you have a bit more time to check the bounce. Works beautifully in all the tail draggers Ive flown so far. From j3s, Citabrias, Decathlon, Extra, all the Pitts line, Ha...
