Re: YYZ 2 hr arrival delays due wind

but when I see an airport layout like KBOS and then see that they have a published arrival rate and departure rate of 116-125/hr I get confused how they can push that many aircraft and YYZ can’t. Interesting reading on KBOS. It is always good to see how other airports do things, and how they do it ...

Re: YYZ 2 hr arrival delays due wind

Why? Honest question. Is it airport layout? Restrictions imposed by Nav Canada? The GTAA? From the arrival side? Simple numbers. I gave you the flow rates as the example. If we are talking PEAK arrival periods (which is what we are talking about from the days in question on the 33s). A triple rate ...

Re: YYZ 2 hr arrival delays due wind

Arrival rate in a dual operation is about 50 odd, give or take. Arrival rate in a triple operation can be up to 70 odd Arrival rate on the 33s BEFORE offloads is up to 36 aircraft, and then that depends on how many heavies there are in the picture. The numbers don't lie. You can't honestly expect th...

Re: First time doing STAR's

You will get given the arrival runway no later than 60 miles out from YYZ. ATIS will give you an "idea". However the definitive will come within the distance stated, and is dependent on whatever operational factors are in effect. Let us know if you can't make the restrictions. Please PLEASE don't sl...

Re: YYZ pilot questions

Just curious what the purpose of "final approach" is Cossack is correct, basically making sure the traffic on the adjacent approach does not wander off the their ILS or experience a false capture. "Monitor" is pretty much what we do. Personally speaking I am not a fan when aircraft get switched to ...

Re: Does NavCanada threaten us with higher user fees?

You must be living in a different universe to me. Toronto routinely denies VFR service through the Toronto class C airspace. As we have discussed here many times before, they also routinely apply extra restrictions to VFR traffic receiving a RADAR service while using the class E airspace underneath...

Re: Pathetic Pearson Airport

The other day an Encore plane reported that they hit the blast of B-777 to which the controller responded, "get used to it, its going to be the new norm". Personally, I am happy with this as Canada's spacing requirements I feel are way to much. With that, what exactly can we expect for spacing now?...

Re: Unrestricted descents on YYZ STARs

There are some weird controllers out there (myself included) that have this wacky notion that going down and slowing down isn't all that easy (wonder why!), so an unrestricted descent will help with that aspect. I wouldn't look at it as "efficiency" as such, more that controllers appreciate that YOU...

Re: YYZ Ground Stops

Just returned from the UK Wanted to say that we overshot at Heathrow because the aircraft in front slowed right up inside 4 miles and then rolled right to the end of the runway (missing the high speeds in the process). I am going to take a wild guess and say that this won`t impress ATC that much. It...

Re: YYZ Ground Stops

Not quite sure what is meant by "too little tin" when YYZ is in the top 15 airports worldwide (movement wise) and at a full triple can shift 70 arrivals an hour...plus whatever departures (Cossack can give a better number than me). We are busier than SFO and for number sake....busier than all 3 New ...

Re: YYZ Ground Stops

Some good points. Just wanted to answer a couple of ZBBYLW's points from the terminal perspective. Visuals.....we will still quite often vector you for the visual in a dual/triple because we still want to provide the correct departure spacing to the tower and we want to control the intercept so you ...

Re: New Phraseology for SIDs and STARs: Beginning April 27, 2017

From a pilots perspective the way the US clears you to descend via the XXX arrival is indeed better and yes many of the arrivals do end on a DTW and are not closed up. The way the arrivals and sids intersect in YYZ is part of the problem so you basically protect the stars and sids and you could do ...

Re: New Phraseology for SIDs and STARs: Beginning April 27, 2017

Actually, descend via star is an excellent addition to standard phraseology. The controller issues it, and you can descend when and how you want as long as you meet the star restrictions. Allows you to plan your descent and then fly it exactly as planned. The NavCanada version where they issue you ...

Re: New Phraseology for SIDs and STARs: Beginning April 27, 2017

For once I am not going to post too much on a "public" forum, but I feel safe in saying that YYZ terminal really does NOT like this new phraseology and have MAJOR concerns about its implementation, rationale and overall effectiveness. We do not believe it has enhanced safety. It has caused us unnece...

Re: New yyz slots..this is gonna hurt!

Remember also that there is no ILS approach on 23 either...so to run the "stub" operation as we call it, not only does your aircraft type play a role, you have to accept a visual or an RNAV approach. We are not allowed in the TCU to run RNAV approaches along side each other (with traffic on the para...

Re: New yyz slots..this is gonna hurt!

CYZD is only OK if you can go VFR. IFR? You are either stopping departures (on the 06s) or trying to build an arrival hole (24s). 15s or 33s at YYZ there would be no impact. If you were arriving at a peak arrival time at YYZ you might end up holding as long as you would if you had just been flying t...

London ATCO...send me a pm.

I can say that Nav Canada no longer has an "experienced controller program". However there are other ways to apply.

Re: YYZ pilot questions

I am just curious why the CATII wasn't being offered given the reports The switch from CAT I to II/III is ALWAYS tough...and usually always ends up as confusing till an operation is established. Not only does the cloud base get taken into account..but also the RVRs and whether they are trending low...

Re: YYZ pilot questions

1 Descent via LINNG STAR. Even though it says on the approach plate "All altitudes assigned by ATC", there have been instances in the past were pilots have descended to the altitude shown on the plate rather than the altitude given by the controller. This causes problems on the 24s if an aircraft is...
