Re: Getting Back into Flylng.. documents advice needed
Check with Transport Canada first as you may not be able to apply for your licence booklet without a current medical. Might have to do the medical first. Good point ... I had kept my medical valid and applied for the booklet while still holding a valid Cat III. That being said, it is indeed Industr...

Re: Getting Back into Flylng.. documents advice needed
The big difference will be that where once we had a license and a separate medical certificate, these are now bundled together in an 'aviation document booklet'. The application is here http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/wwwdocs/Forms/26-0726E_1306-05_E.pdf Big difference is that the booklet requires a passpor...

Secondly, I suddenly realized that I recognized the handwriting and the name ... not to mention the Voyageur Airways logos. Bede .. I think you may have been my CFI when I did my PPL wit...

Re: Back to flying
Been there, done that ... I'd been away just under five years, and prior to that for over 20. I started up with RFC this spring, and was finally signed off to go solo a couple weeks ago. Went up by myself for some slam-n-goes just over a week ago. The main requirements were (and have already been co...

Re: Recency requirements - Recurrent training
Been there and just done that. I got my license back in 1985 and really didn't do bugger all with it until about 5 years ago. At that time, it took the following to get signed off to solo: - rewriting the PSTAR - rewriting the radio license exam (as Industry Canada had lost all record of my previous...

Re: Man, flying / learning to fly is frustrating and humblin
If it's any consolation, I'm in the 'been there, done that .. actually doing that' phase at the moment. I got my PPL over 20 years ago, but due to a combination of choices and 'life' happening, I really didn't do much with it until just recently. I've been up three times so far .. first time out was...

Re: A sad day in Canadian Aviation...
One of the students I teach at work is in an Intermediate Communications class. He has social shortcomings and a learning disability. The other day he told me about his gliding experience a week earlier and I've never seen him so excited to share a story. He was looking forward to doing it again! T...

Re: How Do I Start To Restart?
If it's any consolation, I'm in a similar boat, at the moment as well. Got my PPL back in 1985, with the Air Cadets. Back then there was no requirement for 5 hours instrument, so I got my licence with the bare minimum - 40 hours total time. Did a few duals afterwards (though I did fly a lot in glide...

Firstly, you're not old. I'm in my early 40s and just started getting back into it again since highschool. I got my PPL when I was 17 and really didnt' do anything with it until just recently. If it's any consolation, I was scared out of my wits the first couple of times going up .. and that was wit...

Trenton Air Show in the mid 70s. My dad was an instructor at the Trenton Flying Club so we had free access to the grounds, and could get in the gate before the static displays officially opened to the public. I remember one year, and I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 years old, heading out the f...

Re: Montreal F1 Grand Prix Dropped
Pissed me off, too .. I missed this year's race, but went last year (Hamilton's first win, and Kubica's horrendous accident), and loved it. Yeah, it was over-priced, and crowded, and all the hotels and B&Bs jacked their rates up for the weekend, but it was undoubtedly the most fun I had in a long ti...

Re: Is liking CBC Radio a sign you're getting old?
CBC, to me, is both the best and worst of radio. Some shows, already mentioned, like Quirks and Quarks and Vinyl Tap are, IMHO, excellent. Others, like Wiretap and Sean Cullen's 'Simply Sean' drive me completely bonkers, and I've worn indents in my car radio smacking the channel buttons whenever eit...

Never mind the type of flying I do, day VFR, single-engine low-performance is about as safe as general aviation can be. really?? take a look at the last 100 GA accidents...id bet most are in that category although it might be hard to really get an idea of %..because there are so many... maybe your ...

So .. I'm in the process of arranging life insurance, being a new homeowner. I *should* be a pretty low risk .. late 30s/early 40s, healthy, never had a history of any sort of health problems, active, etc .. currently hold a TC Cat III medical, etc. However, my insurance provider has informed me tha...

Hedley offered an excellent summary .. I recently went through the process, after having been away for over 20(!!) years. This is what was required for me .. (1) Renewed my Cat III medical (2) Replaced my radio license (it had been lost years before, and Industry Canada had no record of me ever havi...

Re: Getting back into it.
Well, for what it's worth .. I got my PPL back in 1985 (when, as my dad would say, Pontius Pilate was still in flying school), and didn't do a thing with it for over 20 years. Last fall, I started getting checked out again, and as of January, I am once again current and a qualified Private Pilot .. ...

I've been to a couple of the VW open houses, and to the Air Rally at the Rockcliffe airport this summer. I am utterly blown away by how much they've done to bring so many classic aircraft to the public, and how many amazing airplanes they have in their collection. First time I was out, their Corsair...
