A Pilatus Porter can be fast parked inside one quite effectively- at least RD Jr can make it happen in a pinch.

Re: Extra 200 or 300L

How's IO-360 engine life with this kind of hard aerobatics? Considering it is now at 300h, what are the chances it needs major work in the next 200-300 hours? Would you have reservations about picking up an aerobatic airplane that was used to its potential prior? I.e. structural concerns, safety et...

Re: Extra 200 or 300L

There are two 300's listed for sale on Barnstormers at the moment. One in South Africa or something like that, so the boat ride might be expensive. Also a very nice G202 available. The 202 will fly circles around the Extra 200. Cruises about 160 kts as well. While the MX series make the Extra < (les...

Re: Flying with a Firearm

Just put it in a hardcase, wrap it in brown paper and mail it to yourself. No fuss, no mess, and cheaper to boot, even with insurance on the package. Canada Post trucks gats around with more enthusiasm than Nicholas Cage. I've flown with a rifle once, and it was a real facepalm experience. Dangerous...

Re: Mid-Air collision at Duxford

Under-qualified in terms of skills? Doubtful. The respective pilots were flying multi-million dollar, privately owned machines in close formation. They obviously had their act together well before accident. Why situational awareness fell apart allowing lack of planning to bite them in the hindquarte...

Re: Float season duration?

I flew floats every summer except for one throughout university. All were for smaller operators/ camps, and it was a great time. Graduated school debt free as a result. It's a good plan- go for it.

Re: Belly Fuel Tank for a Beaver

Did they remember to put oil in it before putting it back in the water?

If so, where is it all?? Surely it couldn't be keeping to itself in the oil tank!

Very, very classy machine :prayer:

Re: Float Training Opinions- GTA

Just keep in mind that a Beaver doesn't have some of the quirks that Cessna's do while on the water, and also are able to get out of the corner easily when you almost screw up a docking, both of which may compound and cause a number of 'holy expletives, it's not supposed to be doing this' incidents ...

Re: Hammerheads

I've never felt any excessive torque present during a hammerhead that's been timed right. And that's spinning a metal prop at 25^2. Kick early or late and there's a bit of funkiness involved; but timed right, it seems like the airplane knows what it should be doing. I have a theory that these 'rogue...

Re: Downwind Takeoff and Landings in DHC-2

When it comes to something like a dw takeoff in a beav, this is my advice: if you have to ask about it, you're not ready to take that particular leap of faith. When you're experienced enough to pull off the feat, you won't have to ask about it. Chill, be happy, and take things slower. The ten minute...

Re: Aviation's most demanding missions/jobs

As far as TC not having an official endorsement, that might need to change. Dangerous thought right there... remember how once upon a time Aerobatics Canada thought it would be in the best interest of aviation in Canada to implement an 'aerobatic instructor's rating'? Good idea at the time, I'm sur...

Re: Should upset recovery be included in flight training?

I'd speculate that if the 'upset recovery' skill aren't practiced on a semi-regular basis, they'd be of little benefit three years down the line when an event actually does happen. Complacency that you recovered from inverted three times in an Extra isn't going to make a lick of difference when your...

Re: Red Bull Air Race Crash

All race aircraft have Spare-Air canisters, as depicted above. As a side note, having a Spare-Air onboard would be a heck of an idea for the float drivers reading to consider. Crash due to high speed stall trying to make the corner, as seen on film. Fast thinking to level wings with the solitary fun...

Re: Beaver as a Skydive Jump Plane?

'Beaver's as a jump plane' is a conversation that comes up at every dropzone across Canada at least once a year. There's a reason why thy aren't used- they've been tried before many times, and were always outclassed by even lowly Cessna's for the job. Climb rate is one deficiency. An obnoxious prop ...

Re: skydivers escape plane crash (w. video)

I believe the pilots at that particular DZ would wear chutes when flying smaller ( single engine ) a/c; but not when flying the twotter or casa. Perhaps there was a perception of greater safety in the bigger a/c ... I honestly can't say, as I didn't hang around there much. Only stopped off briefly ...

Re: skydivers escape plane crash (w. video)

Most gliders don't have transponders, as the only source for power is batteries or solar cells. Actually.... many serious glider pilots/ owners who thermal/ ride mountain wave/ operate in high traffic areas *do* indeed have transponders such as the Trigg model or similar. Jets and gliders have a lo...
