Tropopause definition? as used for the ASEP
Here's an oddball question. I've always thought of the tropopause as the boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere. Where the air ceases to cool with height. Now often the ASEP will have the blue line for the Tropopause at heights that appear random. Sometimes it's across the minus 40 C ...

Re: Skydiving plane fails at 7,000ft
You wouldn't get me abandoning a plane that could safely be flown. Plus he's near a runway and a bunch of fields, not really risky terrain for an off airport landing if it comes to that. Gliding a plane to a runway should be a non event, but it does require proficiency. Plus if he was the owner, jum...

I work under 704/705 and still instruct. Just watch your hours each month. The hard one not to break is the 300 in 90 days. Another consideration is what kind of instructing would you be doing? I don't think it's fair to the students to take on people you won't be able to commit the proper time to. ...

Ok, there have been 4 'layoffs' due to seasonal requirments. In the past, if 30 were hired for a summer, 25 would be laid off due to seasonal needs. Now 4 of the 30 hired have been let go for the winter. Last winter, a friend of mine was 'laid off for the winter' and had full time work all winter be...

Yeah, he was contacting terminal looking for help with directions and elected to do a precautionary. But he must have been LOW if he didn't want to risk climbing 2000' more feet to be picked up on radar. I know my co-workers heard others making calls for an hour after trying to contact them. Good wo...

Anyone know what happened to QRR today?
Today we heard a light cessna calling on 133.35 that it was lost and running low on fuel. The pilot called terminal for help with directions but was below radar altitude and "didn't have enough fuel to climb from A064 to A085". Last we heard the pilot announced that they were almost out of gas and w...

I agree that another frequency besides 122.75 would be nice for glen valley. Frequently, I've turned the radio down when hearing americans having 40 minute conversations with friends. Still, I don't understand why anyone would have a personal conversation on a very public frequency. Personally, if I...

Mixed thoughts on that idea: Pro's: - Less weather dependant for future flights - A different type of experience gained during your training. Conns: - You need 50 hours pic xc to hold your ifr. After you have built this you may not have that much time building left. - An ifr rating pretty much only ...

Just a question, but was the weather the day you went in the sim to "practice" Range and Endurance a bad weather day? Did your instructor give you the option of this extra cost? (ok, I'm being a shit disturber) Range and endurance do give you practice flying (reduced airspeed flying leads to better ...

On the supervising side: If you are using class 4 instructors, you need "Operational Control". To me this means you need to know what's going on and be there/available to handle problems. With a little school, I imagine that being available by cell phone and making sure you know what your instructor...

Ok, I'll bite... "Instructor Ratings" don't make the instructor. But they do save cash on the CPL requirment. I had a student come in yesterday who had 30 hours of dual float time. He has no asperations for an ifr and wants his commercial license signed off. Unfortunatly he needs about 15 hours 'dua...

Altopilot I agree with most of what you're saying. But you have a tonn of experience and my students are looking for exposure. A first time ifr student should see as much as possible in their training. That includes actual imc, going through the hoops of ifr, and handling the workload of everything ...

Nope, some of the other instructors don't book the spots for their students. But it's just so much easier for me to organize any changes that need to be done in the day. The majority of my students are full time and are very flexible in their schedules, so it isn't a problem if things need to be shi...

Ok, I didn't bother reading all the fun arguing above my post so maybe someone said this. Talk to someone who has been doing this longer than yourself at your school. I try and make a game of "spinning to a heading" to make spins fun for people who have jitters. You can also "spin to a heading and a...

Don't worry, I'm not applying. I think that's 1/3 of what most MIFR instructors make. And less than $11/hr in the sim, what does tim hortons pay again? That's just wrong. I can understand it's hard at some schools to break into the MIFR, and that could be the appeal, but the pay is wrong. With thing...

Just curious what the current pay is for a MIFR instructor at Perimeter.
Looking to compare what it's like across the country. I know some of the gta schools seem to have us all beat.

IFR Practice Approaches in the States
Ok, I'm looking to do a training flight from Vancouver to San Fran. Is there a system in place in the States to reserve slot times for practice approaches? We're looking at doing a few approaches on the way, but don't want to land or go through the hassle of multiple flight plans.
