Re: Radio & GPS for a J3

I just flew a cub with same instrumentation as yours from Northern Manitoba to Vancouver and it was as cold as you describe. For years I have used an Icom hand held with a good external antenna and plug to hook into A/C electrical system. As well the adapter to plug a David Clarke head set and push ...

Re: Alkan Air - First Officers

I would agree with you as well Fogducker Whitehorse is a great place. I spent some time there early in my career 1971, I took my wife there for our honeymoon and still have the same one after all these years in aviation. With 42 years in the industry I'm semi retired on the Island, but haven't total...

Re: Gee Bee Racer

Hedley I'd say your advise about flying one is right on. After building and flying many high performance airplanes, every model of Pitts from S1C to the Model-12, as well as a highly modified Model 12 with a 450 hp R-985 in it, I'm not sure I'd want to tackle a Gee Bee. I watched Delmar fly his at m...

Hey Rowdy

Great pictures of the YBL area looks as good as when I was there 24 years ago. Except the docks were full of airplanes in those days.

I believe if you could track down Steve Wolfe, he had something to do with the building of the Gee Bee.

XS I hope you have a lot of anphib time on the BC coast, and ski time as well. I have a lot of time on both, and have done a LOT of training on both and know in the right set of circumstances even with the warning systems on board just about any pilot can get it wrong.

C-GDOV has a -28 engine as well. Earlier in its life as CF-RDA when Ptarmigan had it in the 70's it had a -6 in it.

Re: When is it time to pull the pin?

Interesting post DR. When my wife first read it she thought it could have been written by me. I also have 42 years in the industry and am planning on hanging up the David Clarkes next spring, for most of the same reasons you mention. I must say by and large aviation for me has been a great way to ea...

Cessna is changing them on all 306 aircraft, a problem with the way they were first built. We had an early SN ac that had 11500 hrs on it and they were still hanging in.

Here is a picture of Super Husky CF-MAN in Whitehorse April 1979 being readied for float season. I believe it was later that season that Slippery Ed put her into the bush north of Mayo Yukon.

Re: Beaver down off Saturna island (Updates)

One of the things that comes to mind from my days as a coast dog is when the wind reaches 30 that was when you really started watching where you were operating out of. Unfortunately you can land a lot of places that are very tough to take off from again especially with a load. And as someone above s...

Re: Met an old friend again.

Hey Cat how come you dissasembled the Mong to take it back to CD? I rebuilt it for the last owner, and after we put a bigger rudder and locking tail wheel on it, it was a lot less challenging to fly. With the open cockpit and all it could have been an interesting flight home. I certainly do agree wi...

Re: West Coast To Hawaii

I have done that trip quite a few times with the Citation 750, depending on winds we have left from Seattle but normally go out of San Francisco. Fuel is not the main problem having a plan if you have to descend at mid point for any reason is. Some of the Citations have smaller O2 bottles. We run at...

Used it many times with the Turbo Beaver, Caravan, Twin Otter, and Citation. It was only approved for departures, and worked best when the tin movers were in the tower. I noticed the last trip into YVR that its still marked as a runway.

I use to go to all the Nav Can user meetings for the YVR YYJ user areas, during the 80's and 90's, and I believe what ODF says is true. It didn't mater what ideas were put forth the minds were already made up. And as said if there going to grab all the airspace at least they could have enough contro...
