Re: So I kinda want to be a mechanic.

I'm 100% behind you niss. I'd love to be able to do the maintenance on my own aircraft too. But I dont think I'll get licenced, far too troublesome, and as you can see, some mechanics around here feel threatened pretty easily. Does my AME let owners assist? Not a chance. And thats pretty boring. I c...

Not sure about the yoke, CAR 625 Appendix A Elementary Maintenance states: (20) removal and replacement of co-pilot control levers, wheels, pedals and pedal guard plates that are designed for rapid removal and replacement, on other than transport category aircraft; (amended 2004/03/01; previous vers...

Re: Going rate for an annual

I know that a lot of the AvCanada users can easily start a storm but I had my share in starting this one so I'll add this: My aircraft isnt a Honda Civic (read: Cessna 172), I cant get parts around every corner. In fact, generally parts only come from one source. So that I order a part or my AME doe...

Yup, Fletchair would be the first place I'd look for one: http://www.fletchair.com/catalog/section12.pdf

Re: Going rate for an annual

If we assume my aircraft's value is the hull value listed on the insurance, then: I pay 5% of my aircraft's value yearly on insurance. I pay 6 to 8% of my aircraft's value on the annual inspection. As for SeptRepair's earlier rant... Whether my AME or me order the parts, they'll be ordered from the ...

Re: Going rate for an annual

I keep waiting for some of you to realize Im talking about parts that HAVE to be ordered. Whether I order them or the AME does, they have to be ordered.

I even took the time to uppercase and bold those words in my last post

Re: Going rate for an annual

Just to clear things up, Im not in the 'office supply' business. I chose this nick because at the time of registration, the penholder at the computer desk had a label which stated 'OFFICE SUPPLY!' on it. As for the subject of parts for my "car/truck/motorcycle/boat etc." My car is under warranty and...

Re: Going rate for an annual

I do not mark up parts which I can aquire for cheaper than most because it means more work, which I don't like any more than the owner does. You are cutting yourself short AND doing a disservice to the industry when you buy then sell parts at cost ,,,,i used to do that, i smartened up !! My AME doe...

Re: Going rate for an annual

Maybe Im missing something, but.. assuming an annual is done by following the 100hrs/annual inspection procedure as written by the aircraft manufacturer.. I fail to see how annual number 1 could cost 20 hours of labour, but annual number 2 could cost 12 hours. Does this mean you do a thorough job on...

Re: question about the new aviation document

But, I like the booklet a lot more than the old paper stuff. Even the cover's colour is right What is wrong with the old one, it allows you to fly any aircraft that is covered by the license and also earn money doing so if it is the proper license. I have not seen the new one but I doubt it will fi...

Re: question about the new aviation document

Just an FYI, I have successfully crossed the border (Ontario to New York) once with the Aviation Document (booklet) instead of my passport. The agent at first looked at it and asked for my passport. I told him that I had been told (forget by whom) that it was a valid document for border crossings. H...

Re: air oil seperators,, Hedley or someone?

I took ownership of this plane in 2007, the previous owner took it in 2004 and was the first to fly it since 2000 (not counting a 0.6 flight in 2000). And a few owners previous didnt fly the plane for about 5 years as well. When I got it, compression on #3 was low (58). That cylinder had a history o...

Re: air oil seperators,, Hedley or someone?

Anything above 4.5 quarts tends to get blown out (on an O-235) and when I bought the plane it had a weak cylinder. I was told it was piston rings that had aligned. My AME suggested that as well when the cylinder's compression went back up. But the thought of being able to run the engine with 6 quart...

what about installation? Is it as simple as buying the part and handing it to my AME for installation?

BH would this also be a problem on an engine pre-heated in winter?

air oil seperators,, Hedley or someone?

Hedley mentioned in this topic (http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=58711) about air oil seperators. Specifically the M-20 series (http://www.m-20turbos.com/content/products/breather.php?link=breather) and (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/m20airoilsep.php) and (http://w...

Re: Oil in 172

replaced at next annual Don't defer snags. Fix stuff that's broken NOW so that your annual isn't hell week. I'd take a hell week over a 5 month downtime! (which has been roughly the length of time taken for my first two annuals) How does the SAE scale work? I thought 15W50 's '50' was SAE 50. Good ...

Re: Oil in 172

Thanks Hedley, What Im thinking I'll do is change oil in October to 15W50 for the winter months, and then again in April to W100 Plus for the summer months. I do preheat in the winter, I have a small 900W electric heater that rests on the bottom cowling blowing hot air on the oil sump. With the wint...

Im just an owner like your soon-to-be self but this is what I know/have been told: -Engines have both a TBO in terms of hours, but there is also one in terms of years. As I recall Lycoming recommends overhauls every xxxxhrs or every 12 years. Mine for instance, was overhauled in '93 and only has abo...

I've created spreadsheets for all of my books. Pilot logbook, journey logbook, technical logs.

Best of all they're all tweaked and programmed the way I want them, and they were free (and fun to make!)

If you have OpenOffice on your mac, you should be able to open any Excel sheet.

On that subject, I have found that I get a lot of oil on the belly (blow by?). I run 15W50 summer and winter but Im considering instead doing 15W50 in the winter and perhaps something like 80 or 100 in the summer. Any suggestions? Its an O-235-C2C engine which tends to blow out anything above 4.5 qu...

Nav Canada's user fees (which someone like yourself virtually never pays, because you fly VFR everywhere) I need a bit of clarification: Every year I get an invoice from Nav Canada for a 71 dollar "annual" (on the invoice the 'type of charge' is 'annual') fee, which seems to only be because I own a...

Re: Replacing plastics instrument panels

The panel I have is pre-molded so I knew where to cut. Since I have both small and large instruments on the panel, I opted for a 1-3/4inch hole saw. Unfortunately all Home Depot carried were for wood/metal but it did the trick without melting which was a bonus. I chose the 1-3/4inch because it was a...
