No, no, no.... we drained them with the fuel drains on the wing and the engine fuel drain on the ground... had the airplane grounded and also two fire extuinguishers nearby....co-joe wrote:Hopefully you weren't in the air when you ran it dry?

Re: Difference between standard and long range tanks in a 17
It's been awhile since I flew 172s, but I seem to recall the panel over the fuel tank on the standard range models was rectangular while the panel over the long range tanks was an "L" shape. That's exactly what I needed to find out... It seems that the long range tanks indeed have this 'L' shape, a...

Re: Bellingham expansion to attract Canadian pax
If I can get a flight out of or into Bellingham to meet my travel requirements, I take it. Much cheaper and less hassle than YVR or YXX. Apart from cheap flights to 'Vegas or other places on Allegiant, how is KBLI less hassle than CYXX? I thought Abbotsford was the easiest airport in the Lower Main...

Re: Difference between standard and long range tanks in a 17
Someone mentioned offline that perhaps the distance between a line of rivets or screws would indicate whether it had standard or long range tanks? Perhaps the distance between them would indicate the difference? Can anyone confirm or deny?

Difference between standard and long range tanks in a 172
Is there a visual method to tell the difference between standard and long range tanks in a Cessna 172? (short of draining the fuel and measuring) Sometimes I rent and there may not be a dipstick handy in which case I usually keep a couple in my bag. Not all fillers are placarded. I am looking to fin...

Re: flying over the rockies, vfr, light twin, early summer
I agree with the above poster's suggestion of some mountain flying courses. For those of us in BC almost everyone goes through a one-day mountain flying introduction once the PPL is done.... A friend and I flew to Springbank last year during the Canada Day long weekend: Abbotsford - Nelson - Lethbri...

Re: Vargas Island, British Columbia
Looks like a nice place on the google. Were they float planes that landed in the sound then pulled onto the beach? You would not land on the actual beach would you? I think it would be more interesting to have a beach you could land on with wheels but there would need to be quite a bit of perpetrat...

I'm climbing off the cross now. To the O.P., I'm not saying don't fill it yourself, but please for your own safety, read up on it first. I would hate to be reading up on what happened in the 'incidents and accidents' forum here in the AVCANADA Forums. Fair enough. I had some gas cylinder handling t...

Re: Filling oxygen bottles in the Lower Mainland
I've got a transfill hose for mine. I already have O2 for the welding torch, so I just fill off that. As Ed said it is super cheap that way. You would pay for the hose in a fill at the price you paid. If you aren't down with the effort, then just go see the guys at Air Liquide next time. Is this a ...

Re: Filling oxygen bottles in the Lower Mainland
I was in ZBB a few years ago and couldn't get oxygen, we ended up flying to YVR and got filled up at Million Air. Lurch Yeah, I was in a real pinch last week so I went to Million Air... they are named that for a reason! The folks there were very accommodating and freindly and basically filled my bo...

Yeah, I pooched the forced approach on the flight test, but as explained before, I didn't focus on the mistake and I moved on. I partialed that one item ... Did you get the sense that making the field was everything and that the mayday, restart, pax brief, etc. was secondary ? I've always been over...

Re: Any advice for PPL hopeful ?
One thing that I remember from my flight test ground portion was all the flight planning. I thought I did a good job of planning the flight and thought I remembered everything, but for easily an hour or more I was grilled on everything I had presented the examiner. I had to justify almost every deci...

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/story/2012/05/01/ns-michelin-airport-study.html This is outrageous. It’s just a ploy by the province to attempt to close the airport and use the land for profit. Do they not realise the amount of business the valley receives because of access by the airport...

Filling oxygen bottles in the Lower Mainland
As the topic says: We have a 15 cubic foot SkyOx portable oxygen bottle and we are not having an easy time trying to find someone who can fill it. The FBO at CYXX can only fill airplane O₂systems. We kinda need this for a flight next week and I don't want to send it to Linde or somewhere like that w...

Cross border VFR flying
I'm taking my first VFR trip across the line as PIC in the next few weeks and have been doing research on many things like flightplanning (using the AOPA tools), eAPIS both ways, customs, etc. It seems that I can get briefings and file flight plans with one of two online tools, DUAT and DUATS. It se...

Re: Helicopter style headset for Fixed Wing use?
FWIW, I have two DC H10-76 headsets in our Cessnas with the David Clark Lo-Hi impedence adapters and they work just fine. I have run into a little feedback issues when I use an H-10-36 on my Icom IC-A24... nasty squeal on tx.... but if I install an RF choke on the microphone lead strapped to the boo...

Re: Recommend a handheld VHF transciever for Gen Aviation
They rx ok, but the little flexible antennas suck for tx. They're ok with a real antenna. You would not believe how simple and cheap a real antenna is. Define 'real antenna'? is this a different handheld antenna or telescoping type or an external magmount/ fixed mount antenna? Anyone have experienc...

Recommend a handheld VHF transciever for Gen Aviation
I'm in the market for a handheld Aviation transciever as a backup in case the airplane radio fails... had this almost happen to me a few weeks ago and really got me thinking... I want something like an ICOM AC-24 or the Vertex (Yaesu) VXA-710.. Nav isn't important but might be "nice to have"... look...

Agreed, I was flying on Monday and some idiots were "socializing" on the frequency while I can swear about 8-10 airplanes were constantly trying to get their radio calls in. So stupid. Level of Service Reviews - Vancouver Airspace Review Phase II (pls ignore if previously posted) As I am sure many of you aviators in the Lower Mainland of BC know that there are many changes coming to the airspace effective 2 July and it doesn't look pretty. In fact, in many ways it seems more restr...
