Re: Passive noise reduction headset + earplugs, will it work?

Socsbrian,
Passive noise reduction headsets are similar to ear plugs. Active noise reduction headsets use opposite phase noise to cancel out the noise. A passive headset plus ear plugs will not approximate an active noise reduction headset.

Re: Needless steep climbouts

The Tiger Moth at Edenvale was pranged when the engine quite on a very steep climb out. ( $100,000.00 damage) The pilot was not able to get the nose down in time to get a decent glide. Not sure why it also did not crash on the runway. A draggy plane like that will lose airspeed very quickly in a nos...

Re: Building and selling of kit aircraft

The gentleman did not say where these planes would be built. If they are built in South Africa there will be the MDRA inspections that will be required and if not, they will have to have at least 100 hours on them before they can be imported.

Re: Crowdsourced ADS-B like weather network

Helno,

It sounds interesting but your terminology is all Greek to me. I could probably arrange for one on the roof of a hanger where I am based. How much will it cost and does it need a tech savvy guy to be tweaking or fiddling with it?

Re: Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

Guys,

I send copies of my log books to TC every couple of years or so. They keep them on file and if anything should happen to the originals I will be able to recreate most of the history. They store them for free.

Re: Woman Takes Her Miniature Service HORSE on Flight

Guys, This reminds me of the story my father told me. When him and his brother were young my grandfather bought a miniature pony for them and they picked it up in a 1937 Dodge. It was standing in the back between the front and rear seats with their uncle and the two boys. The horse started to crap a...

I used the Champion 2612 spark plug lube. It is a water/graphite mixture. It is quite thin so a bottle will last a lifetime.

Re: Setting pitch trim for takeoff

I will set nose up trim if I have a strong crosswind upon takeoff. This way the tailwheel stays planted and it lifts off from 3 points. I started doing this with the big tail Stinson and continued the practice with the Thorp T18.

Re: Damaging an engine by turning the prop backwards

Guys, I pull my prop through in the forward direction. I also do mag checks, so I know I won't have a live mag. My logic in this is that it is better to have the oil pump gears pushing oil into the engine in the normal direction as opposed to having the oil sucked out, like it would if the prop were...

Re: Bose aviation headsets...pleased be advised:

I purchased the Sennheiser S1 Digital headset around 2010 and last year had the same thing happen to mine. I sent it in and they replaced the cord set for no charge. I was really impressed since they no longer make it but still support it.

Re: Subaru EA81

I seem to remember that these drives had issues with keeping the belt centered on the pulleys. Also there was no out board support and the large pulley was on a cantilever shaft. I looked at them and went with a planetary gear drive, which eliminated the offset of the prop shaft from the engine cran...

I left after the Doug Ronan issue and found that there is life after COPA. They haven’t fixed the wrong they did and changed bylaws to justify their actions. I will not be back.

Re: Info Request: Hearing Loss - DHC-2 Beaver & DHC-3 Otter

Guys, The noise level at 102 db is very high. The scale is a logarithmic scale. Two identical noise sources side by side will increase the sound level by 3 db. In other words to get the sound level down to 90 db(12 db reduction) will really need to have the sound source reduced to 1/4 of what it is ...

Lindsay Airport no Longer in CFS

Guys, I was looking at my newest CFS last night and noticed that the Lindsay airport is no longer in there. Does anyone know what happened? I know the strip was getting rough last year but thought that it was going to be resurfaced and the town was going to be spending money to upgrade things. Regar...

I was out there last night and from what i could see; 1) Both bottom wings broken 2) Left gear leg broken 3) Fuselage twisted 4) Lower nose bowl damaged 5) Prop scratched I did notice the P lead wire was out of the crimped terminal end. The engine stopped on climb out so there were limited options a...

Jukka, I don't know about the "Farmer Astronaut" but you are pushing the boundaries of being a space cadet! I doubt you will get anyone interested in this. The span alone is 98000mm which is about 321 ft. Where will you find a building to assemble this? The drawing is nice but you will need a lot mo...

Re: Carb Heat

My old Stinson with the Franklin engine, which had the intake tubes separate from the sump would for ice real fast when conditions were right. I got into the habit of pulling the carb heat on downwind every time. Frequently I would see the effects of carb ice in cruise and had to apply heat. I guess...

Re: Where to do a homebuilt project in the Toronto area?

I agree that if you aren't close to the project you will most likely not finish it. It needs to be in your face to be able to maintain the momentum. I found that I had to commit to a minimum of 20 minutes a day to mine. Some days it was just sweeping and cleaning up but I did finish 6 1/2 years late...

If it was at night I would turn off the landing light. Better off not knowing what was waiting for you in the decent.
