Re: Attention: Friends of . . (aka Cat Driver)
.. I was deeply saddened to hear that terminal cancer of a loved one has added to our many mutual experiences. Behind every good man is a good woman, and nowhere is this more true than in aviation. We put our women through so much, yet only the truly faithful stick around. Your staunch, unwavering i...

Re: Best trees to put er down in?
Not from personal experience, but I understand you have to 'fly' the aircraft into the trees, whether with or without power. A stall would result in a nose-down plummet between the trunks, with not only a more sudden stop, but less damage to the trees for searchers to find. A friend experienced with...

Re: Air Mikisew shut down?
I could probably write all day on this subject, but: 1.) Yes, it would be nice if TC got its own act together so some kind of respect and cooperation could be initiated. 2.) TC no longer follows the rules. sorry, they rarely do, but there was a time, "in a universe, far, far away." 3,) Despite some ...

Re: is SMS dead?
Dust Devil. I respect your opinion, but you have historically defended SMS in a small company as being an OK type of thing on these discussions. Perhaps under your management, there are open lines of communication between you and your four pilots. That is excellent. However, I would venture to say t...

Re: Photo Info Request
Yeah, those were the days. Not far north of Rae Point was a place where the well blew out and the water coming out built a volcano shape that was there for years after. It was very big. Then there was the total blow-out on King Island (?) sorry, I don't have a map and Google earth does not know its ...

Re: Photo Info Request
I tried copying and zooming but it did not clearly reveal what the black letters say. The right-angle nature of the buildings certainly look like Rae Point, which was Panarctic's HQ, on the middle of the east coast of Melville Island. I believe it closed by 1980. They also had a couple of dogs to wa...

Re: Photo Info Request
the third picture, the blue flag I think is Panarctic, so that would be in the High Arctic, maybe Rae Point or somewhere I think that is a Panarctic paint job on the 100 series Twin Otter. (VERY early serial numbers, by the way)There are no trees in the High Arctic, so the take-off picture does not ...

Re: Kevin Smith vs. Southwest Airlines
tks for the good info as usual, CD. Since many of these people are double the 170 weight, and not being an engineer, I am guessing that obese people would become missiles under rapid decelleration. I remember Medivac beds had to withstand 9 g. Using that as an example, a 4.5 force would exceed that ...

OBEEEESAIR DISASTER. The inaugural flight of Obeeeesair ("Wide body planes with wide body seat for our dearest customers") crashed on take-off from Fatfield NB today. The flight was delayed initially when the forklift loading passengers broke down. A further delay was incurred when an inspector from...

oldncold Just for the record, Clemmons was not the "first" in charge of EAA. Gilbertson was the first and set the mode for total non-communicative disaster. Public transit to both Edmonton and Calgary airports is way overdue. Namao was a better choice, with the LRT only a few kilometers away across ...

Doc. I have stayed out of this landing gear issue. No explanation offered other than avoiding all the dumb slagging going on. Since exactitude seems to be the driving issue, I find issue with your new sign-off comment: At the end of the flight....put the bloody gear down. Does not seem chronological...

Re: Have accidents decreased since T.C. mandated PPC's?
Personally, I would define the "good old days" as the time when electronics played a minimum role in piloting aircraft. i.e. a wireless was the only electronic (radio) device in the aircraft. The advent of glass cockpits would pin it down a little closer. This advance gave pilots a back-up to their ...

Re: Have accidents decreased since T.C. mandated PPC's?
There is no obvious solution to this matter. I too remember when PPCs came in. It seemed a little bit bureaucratic, but it did ensure that some kind of formal training was documented. This provided for separation between the serious companies, who actually did what they documented, and those who fal...

It's strange how many of us can have good relationships with TC personnel yet there is always the "stinger" that there are some bad people there. If they are so few, how come they cannot be singled out and removed, since we all know about them? Also, can someone enlighten me on the "changes that hav...

Yeah, PC, the "government attitude" is exactly where I am coming from.
Canadians need to re-establish their right to good, dedicated Government.
But never mind, the Chinese will be running it forty years from now, or less.

"The manner in which the RCMP responds to my report and that of Justice Braidwood to follow will have a profound impact on how the iconic institution is viewed by Canadians," said Kennedy. Reading between the lines, Kennedy is as good as saying that the top levels of the RCMP have made a mess of th...

Re: Inspectors: Airline safety at risk
OK, Meatservo and rubberbiscuit. i think it is good that we can have dialogue. We do not have to agree necessarily. My point about the 'sheep' is that is exactly what most Canadians these days are. (God knows the Americans may be worse.) Nobody votes, nobody speaks up. It is just that in our industr...

Re: Inspectors: Airline safety at risk
meatservo I agree that people in general are of questionable character. However, that does not mean we have to shrug it off and get on with life accepting this. The dishonesty at the top of TCCA has placed our industry in jeopardy. Trust has been destroyed. I have never been critical of TCCA and Pre...

Re: Inspectors: Airline safety at risk
Boy, there are some strange opinions on here and like Cat Driver, I have just about had it. There is a pretty much universal opinion that SMS should be a good thing, but TCCA has gone totally off the track putting it into legislation. It reasonably fits 705 operations, but gets very tangled with 703...

Rubberbiscuit. It is a bit like driving down the highway at 20 k over the limit. You know you are wrong but in the back of your mind, you know you are taking a chance on getting a ticket. And, this is only the tip of the iceberg. (no pun intended on the story). I realize you support more oversight, ...
