Re: Air Transat Jumpseat riders

I feel like the best strategy is positive reinforcement. Over the past year or so I've noticed that the WJ crews would almost always shake my hand, introduce themselves and make a deliberate point to say, "thanks for coming up to say hi". It does a lot take down the initimidation/feeling of getting ...

Re: A vs. B

The thread drift towards the procedural compliance vs. deviation reminded me of an excellent article, so I dug it up and posted it below. It's a shame though that most won't find it buried here on page 4, but still worth posting. "The goal of all cognitive training in aviation should be mental flexi...

Re: 704/705 ground school requirments

lownslow has it: 725.124 essentially tells you to tell TC (via your COM) how many hours your training will be. They accept it, or they don't. Really though, they accept what you say if it's reasonable, and reserve the right to sit in and monitor your training for effectiveness. @ Rockie : Are all f...

Re: How do I become a test pilot?

Like you, I did some research on my own a few years ago, though mostly out of curiosity. I don’t have the engineering background behind my flying experience or the passion for flight testing, but I really respect the experience and knowledge that these people have about the fundamentals of flying. I...

Re: Navajo baggage door.

Has anyone ever had the nose baggage door come open in flight? Your post reminded me of a case study from a course a few years ago. This may not answer your question directly, but it seems like there has been a fair bit of research and evaluation on this specific issue. http://www.ntsb.gov/_layouts...

"Kieth" must also be a very very strong man to physically lift and carry a woman from Red Lake! All that training Kieth must have done really paid off. Perhaps competing in the caber toss, or the atlas stones events come in handy after all. I understand the woman he pulled out was a YWG customer se...

Re: Cautionary Tale - Training and Checklists

5x5: Great source material for a post! Big Pistons Forever: I agree with your line of thinking, but I'll toss out another take on the TEM perspective. We only have the context that the reporter offers, but I would consider distraction as the threat ; he was using a non-standard start procedure (for ...

USER SURVEY - TC Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM)

I noticed this when I went to download the most recent AIM. Overall, I would say that it's one of the more well-written documents out there, particularly by the government. Here's your opportunity to share your thoughts about what they should be doing with it. The survey is very concise and easy to ...

Re: New IPM in PDF format for free ??

My recommendation would be to save up and buy the book. The link above will take you the zero-cost route, and will get people the min required score on their INRAT exams. The link below will take you the $90 route, and you’ll be much better served (if you read it, of course). As Rockie pointed out, ...

Re: Southern California Safety Institute or University of SC

I can't speak to the SCSI vs USC issue, but I did take a USC course a few months ago. I was really impressed. Course was right at LAX at their 'campus' there; it was a short one so that made it convenient. I second JL's comment about the value of the course being tightly tied to who is teaching it. ...

Re: The ever looming pilot "shortage"

The discussion of pilot shortages is not a Canadian concern. Global airline orders, growing demand in China, Brazil, India, emerging African countries and the growth in the Persian Gulf with the expansion of Emirates, Qatar and Etihad, point to a pilot shortage. I can't see it being a it issue in C...

Re: Airlines Face Acute Shortage of Pilots

The best way that I have ever heard this explained was that in North America, it isn't likely going to be about airplanes sitting on the ramp instead of flying because there will be no pilots to fly them. The issue will be that 5 to 10 years from now, if nothing is done to address it, the Colgan 340...

Re: Medivac info requested, who pays to return a patient to

I used to work for a company that did long-range medical repatriations. Most insurance companies either contract to, or own their own 'assistance companies'. When you crash your rented scooter in Mexico and break your leg, and you phone the 1-800 number off the card you got when you bought insurance...

Re: 'Regional' Flight Crew Selection - What are you looking

I suppose a big question for a lot of people whose career goals are to fly with WestJet is whether or not the Regional operation will become the ‘the’ way to reach that goal. If want to be a WestJet pilot at some point, are you going to miss the boat if you don’t jump on this? Does a guy leave what ...

Re: Canadian North fires boozing Dash 8 pilot

It is also sad for the colleagues who are obligated to report such behavior. Nobody wants to be put in the spot to have to do this. If you are a pilot and you ever find yourself doing or having done something like this, have a good think about the impact on yourself and, if nothing else, others and...
