Re: Which would be more dangerous?
It doesn't matter what anyone thinks here, the free market will decide. Imagine Air Canada implements a two tier pricing scenario YVR to YYZ. With pilots, flight costs $500. Without pilots, flight costs $300. At first, not much adoption. And then, a few happy customers on fare #2.. Then more, then m...

Re: ITA Relevance
You could try to ignore the ground up, pass every exam through regurgitation, but if you are lucky enough to make it to the floor your OJI will realize right away that you have massive amounts of knowledge gap neccessary to be an IFR controller..... This, will delay your progress and possibly get yo...

Re: Percent that pass
Worldwide ATC checkout rates for IFR are similar to Canada. It is a world wide training issue. Of course companies (Nav Canada) or other would love to check out 100% of controllers. It costs them a lot of money and resources too. Overtime protection does not exist.

Sales of used vehicles, boats and aircraft in BC
This really burns me up inside.. It hasn't even made headlines in BC. Nicely tucked away and spun as a positive for 'used' car / aircraft dealers...... http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/03/11/bc-pst-private-vehicle-sales.html The provincial government may be fuelling the black mar...

I would estimate 1 in 4 pilots get passive aggressive if given a vector for spacing.
Why do they take it personal? A lot of things are happening behind the scenes!

Re: Unpaid initial training: strategies?
+1 for Parrot Heads analysis. He pretty much hit it bang on. My course had 8 in generic, 4 got licenses. 50% checkout rate. But being a qualified controller now, I will even add that controllers from other complexes have a say on a trainee. If enough complaints come through while playing pool on bre...

Re: The new "Sure"
I would bet the controller doesn't know how he sounds. Although awkward, i would probably tell him in a nice way... "ahh center, your transmissions are cutting out early..." The equipment doesn't really show you the delay when you are working in the center, and unless you have been a pilot (which no...

Re: "Transition Speed" from a newbie
The above definitions are for the most part correct. Read up on Wikipedia about true airspeed versus indicated versus mach for an in depth answer. From a controllers perspective, If you have a mach restriction on an aircraft, once issued initial descent clearance at destination, the restriction, tec...

Re: U.S. Airways Jet Down in Hudson River
I can attest that 'Mayday Mayday' will not only get your undivided attention as an air traffic controller, It will also quiet the entire 18 aircraft on frequency when it is busy. This happened to me - a plane experiencing decompression made the call.. Very quickly the reports of light chop come to a...

Re: Pilots: Making up your own clearances
would if I was tight on fuel I would tell you "Unable, Fuel" At this point the controller would not be obligated to give you priority handling. The controller would probably ask if you are declaring 'minimum fuel'. This is out of the AIM 1.8.2 Minimum Fuel Advisory Pilots may experience situations ...

Re: Pilots: Making up your own clearances
Instructions should be complied with, unless the captain deems unsafe. Clearances however can be turned down and it is within the aircrafts right. ATC should make clear what they are stating... Example 'ABC cleared direct YXE' versus 'ABC proceed direct YXE' Many times Northwest will not deviate fro...

This really strikes me as close - minded and ignorant on Canada's behalf. Traveling the world makes one a better person and citizen, period. This world would be a better place if everyone had the opportunity and motivation to take some time out and see how others live in this world. But transport on...

Yes, agreed the selection process is the same.. However, once the interview has been passed you are only placed into a large national pool and still guaranteed nothing. From here you must be shortlisted to a local centre, and the wink wink, nudge nudge begins. And it is true that they must qualify, ...
