Re: VOR Receiver check: to log?
In short, yes you need to log it if you are going to the US. There is no requirement to log it in Canada; 91.101 Applicability. This subpart prescribes flight rules governing the operation of aircraft within the United States and within 12 nautical miles from the coast of the United States. http://l...

Re: Handheld Nav/Com Radio - its uses as a backup for VOR nav
I have one. Very pleased with it, and I was surprised how long the battery lasts......and when it does die, it gives you lots of warning.
Never really used the nav function, but for the small extra cost it's worth having.
Matt.

Re: Clearing the rain on a Turbo-Otter
Are there any drawbacks to Rain-X? Is it safe for plastic/lexan? Rain-X works great on glass but I wouldn't recommend it for plastic windows. Alcohol and similar products are very bad for plastics since they dry them out.....leading to crazing and I think Rain-X has a high Alcohol content (the reas...

I was told that they are positions of reporting stations whose information has been excluded from the making of that particular chart.

Re: ATPL study
Aerocourse book is gold. Air command wx. manual is probably the best for Meteorology review and the Instrument procedures manual (INRAT study) is good at reviewing radio aid theory,. The AIM should also be studied to some degree as well. Other than those, I can't thing of anything else...maybe FTGU....

Re: Rentals and Grass Strips
do any of the flight schools in Southern Ontario allow licenced pilots to do this with their planes? More important than 'do they allow it', is are you able to do it safely yourself?. The flight school will likely allow you to fly it anywhere but make sure you are comfortable with soft ground befor...

You're right! under part (B). It's in the wording.
For PPL and CPL (part A) it says 'in the case of the holder'
For ATPL (Part B) it says 'in the case of the applicant'
Cheers, Matt

IATRA/ATPL question....a new one I think.
Hi all. I have a CPL and I'm just shy of having the hourly requirements to get the ATPL license. So, ....I want to fly two crew stuff so rather than writing the IATRA, I went ahead and wrote both the SAMRA and SARON thinking I'd be doing one better. However, the current CAR's say I should have writt...

Re: What would you do? Single Engine Missed Approach
You are on a VOR approach, lose your engine and continue to minimums. At minimums you see no runway and initiate missed approach. What would you do next. Try the approach again or continue to your alternate 100NMs away. (you are in a very remote area) Follow SOP's of course. And while you're at it,...

I flew in there last year and had a blast! It's a treat to get a little grass roots aviation experience. Re: Can a Widgeon handle rougher water than a Beaver?
In your brief you mention higher winds of 20/25 Ktd. The more wind, in my opinion, the better, to land shorter and take off shorter, in bigger water. The most difficult situation is less wind of 15kts or so and rough water . The lack of wind then, limits the amount of large water you can take, by v...

Re: CS vs. FP Props
It depends on a ton of factors including the aerodynamic and economic variety. In my experience I've found that the break-even point is around 180-200hp. Below 180hp, you are adding weight, complexity, and cost and only adding minimal performance. Same goes with retractable gear. A 150 hp 172 would...

Odd jet sighting over Southern Ontario
Yesterday (Oct. 31st) I was drawn outside by the unmistakable sound of a turbojet engine... ...and saw what I believe was a MiG-15 flying overhead. The aircraft was light grey with aux. wing tanks. The giveaway on the type was the divider in the engine intake, Once I saw that I knew it wasn't an F-8...

Re: HOW TO CLEAN A WINDSCREEN
Lots of water is how you reduce the scratching. Not enough water when you're cleaning, you're sandpapering the windscreen. Once you get it clean, the best thing for plexi/lexan is automotive (cleaner) car wax. +1, I use lots of water and mild dish soap and gently work the bugs off with a soft face ...
