Re: Grass strip winter maintenance options

If you get a snowmobile trail groomer you can haul it behind a tractor and it will process and pack the snow. We use one at our airport and have very good results. For most of the MB winter the runway is useable for wheels. In the spring, the runway generally clears off more quickly than the surroun...

Re: Why does AC not have a base in YYC?

I thought there was actually a YYC base back in the '60s. I recall one of the YWG pilots saying his dad was the base director.

Re: Minimum Radius Turn back.

If you would like to see some well researched information on the EFATO turn back please have a look at recent Charlie Precort (sp?) columns in Sport Aviation. There is a reason it is generally referred to as the 'impossible turn'.

Try Hooker Harness. There is also a company in Portage Laprairie but I have forgotten their name.

Re: Aerobatics Training

I thought Sean Tucker had taken to the silk three times because he couldn't get out of a situation at altitude. I know of one for sure and thought I had heard reference to two more.

I am also pretty sure that USAF test pilots were pretty well trained in a side variety of 'unusual attitudes'.

Re: Why do twin piston aircraft not have a barber pole?

The reference mentioned the P-38 had compressibility issues at about M.80. In fact it was a problem at about M.68. For comparison, some other contemporary fighters could reach higher mach numbers before encountering the same problem. I would not turn down any of them if they were offered to me! Cheers

Re: Why do twin piston aircraft not have a barber pole?

"Well... there is this one. http://www.aviation-history.com/lockheed/p38.html But it may be difficult and expensive to find one." My understanding is the P-38 compressibility issues around M.68. IIRC the Bf109 was able to get to about M.75 or M.78 in a dive. The Spitfire was very slightly lower than...

@ahramin;
As i recall that was an example number in the EI literature for the installation of the monitor and seemed like a conservative figure to use.

Re: Shock Cooling a myth?

Cpn Crunch... I've never seen any shock cooling warnings when leveling off and reducing power with an O-360. I can assure you that with an O-200 you can get shock cooling (>30F/min) coming back from climb to cruise in the circuit. I have an EI monitor and have noted it on occasion. As a result I hav...

You can also induce shock cooling just going from climb power back to cruise power too quickly.

"Accidental Airline" does not paint Russ Baker in a very good light. It is a very interesting read.

I remember taking pictures of BXO when she was moored in the Fraser River.

Re: Flight Control Problem Could be the Autopilot

Have a look at the series of MD11 pitch control incidents which in some cases killed people. Some involved the autopilot being overpowered by the pilot and then re-engaging in pitch. Aft C of G created instability and the resulting pitch oscillations produced large +/- g forces.

Re: Overflying (R) Aerodromes where PPR is required?

My understanding of the reason for the ATF extending to 3000AGL is that they tow the gliders to that altitude over the aerodrome. I would certainly want to be talking with them to avoid their traffic before flying through the ATF. As mentioned, the glider traffic can be heavy and difficult to see. W...

Years ago an Aero Commander twin was imported. Looked quite impressive. During the import it was discovered the engines had been overhauled by a shop not on the list approved by TC. Two majors and a lot of money later the import was completed.

Re: Wings Magazine, AC first female pilot.

During her era the airlines switched to two person crews which caused the seniority list to shrink. A lot of flying was also outsourced to the regional connectors which also saw the list get shorter for many years. It was not uncommon for an upgrade to take 20 years. I know of one person who spent 1...
