Re: Edmonton FIR FSS remote locations

I have worked in Churchill and Rankin. Rankin is two in two out and there is a list of people that want to go there. Churchill is great, I know people who work in Inuvik and Norman Wells and they love it. As someone said the north is what you make of it. If you get out and get involved your time in ...

Re: Cut lines in the trees in Northern MB

Not only am i an FSS but i used to be a Mine Engineer Tech! They are claim lines most likely. Used in mineral exploration to stake out or cut the lines on the limit of the claims. Then they will use these boundaries to register there claims. To keep the claim you have to do a certain amount of work ...

Re: Nav canada

There is a possibility of lay-offs in the FSS groups after the whole LOS and FSS closures shake themeselves out. I don't think it will come to that. Not with the amount of retirees and potential retirees looming in the next 5 years. Costs alot to even train even us simple FSS, Did you ever hear the ...

Re: Your personal little quirks on the radio.

I round out all my vowels so i sound like a game show host. There is a female controller in my sector that does the same thing when she answers the phone "wwwwiiiinipeg". Haa haa, makes me sound cheerful, or ridiculous...d.epends on your view!!

I once had a controller friend ask me how we did traffic without radar! Look out the window, your eyes are the most important reliable tool!

Re: New FAA Safety Culture Reflected in Operational Error Report

I'm not sure how it works on the ATC side but.....On the FSS side you can only recieve disciplinary action on the initial investigation. If an incident happens the FSS on duty is pulled from the position for the initial investigation to figure out what happen and if discipline is required or even po...

Re: Nav Canada & safety concerns

I've used the internal safety reporting apparatus before. It worked well and i was very happy with the results. The contact i ahd was good and the follwed up to see if i was happy with the results. Prior to my complaint nothing seemed to be happening but once i used the reporting program things kick...

Re: National HR Plan

There was a mix up on the list and some people at my station were left off. 2 of the 5 people here were not on the list! Only one would have been ineligible due to time at station. No idea what other stations were like but i imagine there was a few other mistakes. Regardless i guess we'll have to wa...

Re: PIREPS

I just use the fancy little point form list on the back of the CFS. I'll tell FSS everything that's relevant. Just to add to this, give us everything! Regardless if you think it's relevant or not. Remember that Pireps are not just for pilots, there very useful forecasting tools for EC. Stuff like w...

Re: Kinda confused

This is my opinion, just an opinion. I think ATC and FSS look for a very specific attitude and personality. I've found over the years that people in ATS tend to ahve very similar personalities and character traits. Personally i'm very confident (my wife calls it cocky) and very competitive, that bei...

Ya even within the bid there is some tough decisions with the possible versus available. My dream spot is a possible but of the 4 i have on my list 2 of the sites have available. Now by some miracle i win on one of the available's and take it to find out 3 months down the road before i even move tha...

Re: FSS to VFR overstaffing offers

Ya NJ i think your right, personally i don;t think that someone from FSS would have a much better chance than someone off the street. We would be comfortable with the lingo, phraseology, procedures and airspace but the jobs are so different that an FSS would have trouble, just like someone off the s...

Re: FSS to VFR overstaffing offers

Actually the common held belief among FSS it is easier to check out IFR than VFR. In a VFR setting when it gets busy and you go outside your comfortable setting you revert to FSS mode and stop contolling. FSS becomes so ingrained in the way you do things that you always fall back on it when the S$%t...

Re: FSS to VFR overstaffing offers

0 is the number NJ, if you took the deal it is a one way street. Either check out or get another career. It was done to reduce the number of FSS overall, if the person who accepted the deal does not check out there will be no job back in FSS, they will be let go!

Re: noob question

There is no more training in Cornwal, well at least not NC training anymore. All trainign si done in the centers and in some of the alrger towers for VFR. If she wants YWG then tell her to only accept a training position in Winnipeg. Since the training is done regionally I believe you will eb offere...
