I once asked a good friend of mine, who is an A.M.E., and owns Otters the same question. His answer was that 200's and 300's are completely different animals. Skins are thicker, basically the whole structure is beefier on the -300 allowing the higher gross weight.

Hi All. Thanks for the amazing photos. I've been off the line for a while fighting an illness and these pictures truly make me realize how lucky we pilots are to do what we do, and how much I miss flying. Keep em coming!!! :D :D

This month marks my 20th year as a pilot. Not boasting just trying to explain that I've been around for a while. I personally look forward to the views expressed by Cat and Doc, and having not personally met them, I nonetheless hold their opinions in high regard. Cat reminds me of some of my first c...

A lot of people care when the metal gets bent. Lets start with the boss. Insurance goes up, loss of revenue during repair, and lost confidence from the paying public. Result equals a poor bottom line, and when that happens to often, then people tend to lose jobs. I once had a boss who used to say he...

You are correct Cat, there has been a lot of bent metal lately. While I do not mean to criticize anyone, I think it is obvious that the experience level in the industry is at the lowest level witnessed in quite some time. The majors have been soaking up experienced people . I know we all have to sta...

Holy crap some of you guys carry a lot of stuff. I only carry what i can stuff into my pockets and flight bag. The exception being a 5 star sleeping bag. My theory being if I go down most of the stuff I carry could be destroyed if the impact isn't polite. I wear the Acton mukluks (which are no longe...

Hi Pratt, In regards to the 1990 Dash 7 incident, it was definetly pilot error. A perfectly serviceable airplane was landed with the nose gear retracted. The D3 circuit breaker as I recall was the culprit. As most of my time is in the quad, this particular scenario has been covered in many groundsch...

Getting back the Cat 1

Hello all, haven't had the chance to talk to my doctor yet but does anyone know what happens to your medical if you have to undergo cancer treatments? How long do you lose it for? Is it hard to get back? Least of my concerns right now, but just looking for some info. PM me if you'd like, thanks.

I wish I could say all of my dealings with TC have been positive, however that has rarely been the case. You do find some who try very hard to educate, and you benefit from your exposure to them. The majority however seem to enjoy intimidation and heavy handed tactics.

Unfortunately in this world, some people enjoy screwing others, and will use any bit of information they can find to do it. Some of these people work in private industry and some are bureacrats. For that reason I prefer being anonomous.

Ah, good old Beaverlodge Lake. My dates are kind of fuzzy, but this Bristol belonged to PWA. In the mid 50'sor early 60's, this aircraft had a wheel go through the ice after landing. Rather than a repair, it was towed to shore, and they took the insurance. Less than a 100 hours on the tach so the st...

Enough already. I also have lost many friends in this industry. But the abuse of our passenger's blind trust has to stop. I mean no disrespect, and I'm sure each pilot was a good man, or died doing what he loved, but this provides no solace to the friends and family of the deceased passengers. XSban...

Nope, the approach plate has a beacon crossing altitude, and when our altitude did not match the one on the plate, we realized our error.

Thanks for the info everyone. At the end of a tiring 6 hour leg filled with nasty weather enroute, an early flight delay, and passengers who felt the headwind was directly tied to the flight crew's ability or lack thereof, my f/o and I both pooched the altimeter setting. We were out about 350 feet, ...

Altimeter Setting

What altimeter reading is depicted on the radar screen, actual altitude, or altitude as shown on the aircraft altimeter? For example, if the altimeter setting is 29.62, but 29.82 is accidentally set, what does the controller see? Obviously if cleared to 7,000, and the pilot calls level, they would a...

Excellent program. Unfortunatly this illustrates what happens when you have more dollars than sense. Really liked the ex-airline pilot who never flew off-strip or a Caribou before, then tried to do both. My understanding of Discovery Air is that each company under their umbrella is to be run independantly. Currently two companies belong to DA, one poised to fall, and if the tiny voices are true, two more in negotiation. So, H&L info as far as I've been told, will have to come from H&L.
