Re: METAR question: What does "E-S" mean?

E-S means east to south. Directions in Remarks always go clockwise, so if it was E-W it would be east through south to west. East and South would be E+S.
Hope this helps.

Re: Proper Radio Proceedures

We do have a mute function on our panel, however, where I work, you have to turn your back on that panel in order to deal with our RAAS airport strip board. Not a well thought out workspace - everything was just crammed in wherever it would fit. Beefatarian(sp?) The mute function doesn't completely ...

Re: Proper Radio Proceedures

My biggest pet peeve as an FSS is when pilots don't know how to make an initial call. The first call to any ATS shall be : Station you are calling (XXX radio/tower/centre) Your aircraft manufacturer (Piper/Cessna,etc) Your ident (with flight numbers ie. ACA900, manufacturer can be omitted) THAT'S IT...

Re: Geocaching

I just started geocaching about 10 days ago. So far I love it. There are about 400 caches within 15 miles of my house, quite a few out on the trails nearby. I am attending a local geocachers meet and greet next Saturday...should be a lot of fun. I bought a Garmin Dakota 20 specifically for caching w...

GilletteNorth RIP

It is with great sadness that I advise you of the sudden passing of GilletteNorth on Jan 14, 2010.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Re: YKZ Line Manager Dave (aka DR) Richardson passes away . . .

That`s terrible news. Though I haven`t been back to YKZ in about 7 years, I spent many years there as a Seneca student, TAL instructor and FSS and Dave was always there to lend a hand or tell a joke or cheer you up if you were having a bad day. He never seemed to have a bad day...he was always cheer...

Re: Special VFR

I just hope the little guy has a transponder and the medevac has TCAS because when he breaks out of cloud there will be no time react. And I am sure you can feel IFR pilots not being confortable when they know there is a VFR guy just below the ceiling. It would be even more stressful in IFR conditi...

Re: Special VFR

When the medevac is on the approach and the little cessna with the low time pilot is bombing around at 400ft just below the cloud with 3 miles vis, I'll be waiting for the explosion. I was told that traffic separation should keep them apart, but with only DF equipment and the pilot's word for his di...

Re: Vegas

I was in Vegas in July and saw the Cirque du Soliel's Love - The Beatles show. It was fantastic! It helps if you are a Beatles fan, but even if you'd never heard their music, it would be great. I'm going again in November and I think I might see the show "KA" although I have heard mixed reviews on it.

Re: Special VFR

I had a very frustrating discussion with our regional "specialist" regarding this issue. Here's how it went... Further to the email we received regarding SVFR, I am wondering how a pilot can remain VFR without a ceiling of 1000 ft. According to CAR’s a pilot must be 500 ft below the cloud and 500 ft...

Re: Clicking the mic

Any ATC clearance or instruction MUST br acknowledged with the aircraft ident. (ex. descend to..., or turn base now, etc) Too many similar sounding idents out there and it is too easy to respond to another aircraft's clearance or instruction. (esp. two aircraft from the same company). If an acknowle...

Re: Sorry, just have to rant!

Actually, the air to air freq in the SDA is 122.75. Until recently 126.7 was used for contact with FSS enroute. The only time it was permissible to just blindly transmit on this freq was if you were outside of controlled airspace AND out of range of any FSS. So many pilots decided to start blabbing ...

Re: Fredericton To Get Control Tower

Yes, the numbers for Fredricton would indicate that a tower should be opened (reopened!) there. However, having a tower will not suddenly stop all of the instances of student pilots not understanding what they are being told. You can tell them to follow the C172 on left downwind, but if the student ...

Re: Blood Donation

The way it was explained to me (many moons ago) was that the VOLUME of blood is replaced very quickly by your body, but it takes much longer for the HEMOGLOBIN (which carries the oxygen in your blood) to be replaced. So flying at altitude would affect you much more.

I didn't bother to bid on anything, even though I am at an "affected" site. Six people from this site put in bids, but only 2 of them ended up on the list. Apparently quite a few people were left off the list for no reason (they had enough time and/or were at affected sites.) I saw your name...

Re: National HR Plan

I don't think that they can arbitrarily re-post me. I have almost 16 years in, so I should have some say. Although, the last time they closed a station on me, I was told if I didn't sign a request for the FIC, they would send me wherever they wanted! This time I'll fight for a posting that I want, w...
