I really hate to keep beating this poor dead horse, so allow me a few last thoughts and I'll shut up. Duplicate2: That site you linked to is very interesting, and gave me quite a bit of food for thought. I'm going to take the liberty of briefly paraphrasing some of the author's main thoughts. Essent...

Good point, but since only the lottery-like windfall lawsuits seem to be newsworthy, plenty of people are willing to take the chance, reasoning that they don't have much to lose (blood from a stone, right?) and the payoff might just be huge. Lawsuits have done immeasurable damage to aviation. Perhap...

Since I started reading this thread I've been thinking about this topic quite a bit, and these are my thoughts. I think the concept of horizontal/vertical lift from the banked airfoil is pretty well understood and accepted by everyone here. So let's look at the forces involved in a left turn, for ex...

Life at work is like a tree full of monkeys - those at the top look down and see nothing but smiling faces; those at the bottom look up and see nothing but assholes. Some people are like slinkies - they don't really serve a purpose, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the st...

Both are essentially overgrown Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engines with vastly superior metallurgy and price tags. Okay, that's an oversimplification, and will probably offend a lot of people, but the state-of-the art in aero engine design has essentially remained the same for sixty years. I think t...

Curse it may be, but I don't want the cure. A few days ago I passed my CPL flight test. Come breakup (April) I'll be doing my MIFR, and this fall I'll be actively pursuing work as a pilot. I'll be making roughly one-third of what I make now in the oilpatch, and I'll enjoy every minute of it. Life to...

Oh, and on the subject of a Tutor replacement:

This is going back a few years, and Alberta Aviation is long dead, but this aircraft might have made a good replacement. Certainly it's a very similar aircraft to the Tutor.

Snowbird #8 - Capt. Andy McKay Snowbird #8, eh? That's interesting. That number's had a rash of bad luck lately. First, there was the engine fire in flight and subsequent shutdown and deadstick landing at the Lethbridge airshow last year. (It was a very nice landing, I might add.) Once they changed...

Centerline Thrust Twin Time Vs. Conventional
Okay, so what's the consensus here? Is it worth building a few hundred hours in a 337, or do employers discount that time because it's not a "real" twin? Or do they really care as long as it's multi time? If anyone has any personal experience in this regard I'd like to hear about it.

It seems there's no such thing as a free ride or a free lunch. If you take something to keep awake and it f@*ks up your sleep patterns or causes you to crash later, then you're really no further ahead. Thanks for all the input. After due consideration I think I'll just stick to the old tried-and-tru...

Red Bull and Flying
I tried this stuff for the first time a few days back, and found it to be pretty effective - almost scary effective, in fact. It occurred to me that on a long flight ending with a challenging approach in poor conditions, it might be a real godsend to have one of these things handy to get rid of the ...

Perhaps, but if you had been leaving the barn door open up for months or years and the horse had stayed put all that time (I never knew one that would ground tie that well) why would you see a need to close it? I don't know what SOPs are in Calgary, but when I worked at YQL the responsibility of cho...

We'll I've never flown a Tomahawk. But I assume it cruises at 120 MPH. 234 miles direct shold be about two hours. My antique Pietenpol cruises flat out at 76MPH. Okay, actually about a 1.2 hour handicap, plus .3 for a nature break. 120 MPH is about 105 Kts, and that's the best TAS I've yet seen (yo...
