Re: Jet engine run-up

After pushback? Could have been a crossbleed start. They used to be a lot more common. X2...I'm almost positive that's what was happening. FYI if you're not a jet guy, a crossbleed start is when you use bleed air from one engine to start the rest. If the APU is broken and you're hooked up to an ext...

Re: Overnight air shipping in Canada (CargoJet, Skylink, etc

It's also not true to say KFC flies exclusively Purolator and Morningstar flies exclusively Fedex. Every night, depending on space, you will see packages from most of the courier companies on a Purolator flight. There is also Puro freight being carried by Cargojet. Barry Lapointe is also a minority...

Re: Tattoos and flying

Follow the "T shirt rule" and you shouldn't have any problems. That being said, I have tattoos (from before I got into flying) and honestly after over 15 years of having them...I really could care less if they were there or not. I am very happy that they are not visible when I'm wearing a short slee...

Re: Logging Instrument time real world

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between flying IFR in cloud and flying IFR outside of cloud? This subject has always interested me especially when I read so much fixating on the logging flying in cloud thing. Is there a danger involved in IFR in cloud that does not exist outside of...

Instructors should be the type of people who get their thrills from witnessing the "light bulb" appear when a student gets it, not from ripping on a student when they don't.

Re: IPAD anyone have one?

I don't use mine for too much aviation-related stuff (other than logten pro logbook and company forms) Do you know if there is a way to upload existing flight data to LogTen? From an excel table for instance? Ya if you've got an excel table or an existing PC logbook you can import your data into Lo...

Re: IPAD anyone have one?

I don't use mine for too much aviation-related stuff (other than logten pro logbook and company forms)...but I find that it fits inside my flight bag easily, the battery lasts forever, and it weighs a fraction of what my laptop does. Just for those things (primarily the weight and size) I'm happy wi...

Re: So you want to be a flying instructor

My advice for all students who want to be employed as a flight instructor... Your job interview starts the first day you walk in the door. Flying skills are important, attitude and work ethic are essential. Take whatever task you are presented with, and do your best to ace it. Don't accept mediocrit...

Re: "There's no such thing a a little ice"

There's such a thing as a little ice - but as others have stated you have to get rid of it regardless. To suggest it's OK to blast off with a contaminated aircraft is suggesting something illegal and potentially dangerous. As for calling dispatch...Lets say I wound up at an alternate that I don't no...

Re: Logbook question

I believe Logbook Pro is a PC based logbook that you can sync with your iPhone. I used Safelog in the past and it let me do that as well, although I wasn't the biggest fan of the software. I'm pretty sure that most of the PC logbooks have added iPhone functionality. Later on if you make the switch t...

Re: Logbook question

You might not want to confuse Dual and FO time for when you apply for your ATPL. Dual time is full credit, FO time is only 1/2. Might make it a bit tougher to get the application straight. I second that now's the time to upgrade to an electronic logbook and I also recommend LogTen Pro if you're a Ma...

Re: Thunderstorms...are they that bad?

Hedley is right - they are all different and can be treated differently. However - if you don't have the right equipment, and the experience to know which is which, avoid them by at least 20nm. While I have no problem flying above or in close proximity to most CBs we get in BC, you won't catch me do...

Re: Your thoughts on 'sitting sideways'

Feel like I should contribute on this one. The 727 is a fantastic airplane. In Canada, in Cargo Ops, it's not going anywhere for a while...at least until the aquisition costs of 757s drops significantly (my humble opinion...). It fills it's niche very well, at a very low entry cost, and parts are ev...

Re: WHY do pilots land gear up?

Hed - good to see you back. Don't always agree with what you say - but glad you're back to say it :D . The best "philosophy" I've encountered yet is Boeings (at least on the one I fly). That is - all normal checklists are flows first, then verification with the checklist. I think this would work qui...

Re: Flying from Hinton to Mcbride

I do want to do a mountain flying course, I know it is a good thing but for such a trip is it that important if I just stay in the valley? You would also do well to pick up Sparky Imeson's "Mountain Flying Bible" for a winter read. Lots of great info and pretty interesting. I still have my copy and...

I experience one a year in the sim, yet to see one in the aircraft. It was due my last sim ride - and for the first time for me the wheels touched, we bounced twice, and she got airborne again...I tell you - I NEVER want to experience a ride like that in real life. As others have stated, it's not lo...

Re: Icing

Once your speed gets up over 300kts you typically will start sublimating frost and ice off the wing. At higher flight levels I've heard ice can sublimate at a rate of 1mm per 10 minutes when operating clear of cloud (and this is not accounting for the ram effect heating on the wing...). I'm not sure...
