Re: Favorite Aviation Movie?
Four of Ernest Gann's books were made into movies, The Aviator, The High And The Mighty, The Island In The Sky, and Fate is the Hunter. FITH is such an excretable movie Gann sued Universal Pictures and had his name and any reference to him, removed from the film. The Aviator is pretty good, stars Ro...

First reports said "in the lake" so I was gonna suggest getting a couple pairs of them DC-3 amphibs from Folsom's down in Maine.

Oh I say. I also say these incidents will become more frequent simply because of the sheer increase in air traffic.CL-Skadoo! wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2019 9:16 amAn overall change in climate extremes would have implications aloft, wouldn't you say?Siddley Hawker wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2019 3:58 pm I'm surprised no one has suggested climate change as the reason for the CAT.

The pilot hurt his back. Lest anyone think it couldn't happen to me, this has a load of time on floats on everything from Cessnas to the Beech 18 and Mallard....The pilot received minor injuries.

Correct on both counts....but I don't believe the engines have feathering capability if one fails. Gipsy Queens?
The maintenance done in BC last winter was having the wings recovered.

Re: C-47 Takeoff Groundloop and Crash
The guy in the video I linked to checked out the pilot who was flying right seat on the accident aircraft and who was doing the takeoff. Early on the roll the airplane yawed left, the guy in the left seat took control, the airplane then yawed right and headed for a culvert 1800 feet from the point w...

Re: C-47 Takeoff Groundloop and Crash
As a semi-insider in this thing, there are some things I can say with certainty. The engines were operating just fine - very smooth, appearing to make good power. The CG was near the center of the envelope. The gross weight at takeoff was slightly under our self-imposed limit of 25,200 lbs, which i...

You forgot the most important check Siddley. Brain engaged. Heh heh. I once did an IFR renewal all by myself, with just the DOT inspector. At the time I was a co-pilot, but had had my left seat checkout, so just the two of us buggered off and did the ride. Does that qualify as singl...

Re: C-47 Takeoff Groundloop and Crash
The company I flew DC-3's for back when the dinosaurs roamed the range had external control locks that defied anyone to attempt takeoff with them installed. The elevators were locked full down, the rudder at full left deflection and the ailerons at full left aileron. Still didn't trust you though, t...

Re: Water Methanol Take-Off
The RR Dart 529 engine in the Gulfstream 1 was rated at 1910 shp dry power but 1990 shp with wet take-off power. That may not sound like much but remember in high or hot conditions, the engine will not make rated power dry. On a hot day, a wet take-off was almost like starting a third engine. In th...

Re: Skiplane Groundloop
Pardon me if this is a dumb question, but can you groundloop a skiplane? You can with a 185. The first time maybe couldn't be called 'skis' as I was landing with the skis up on glare ice after a rainstorm and refreeze. The braking action was basically nil, but there were snow ridges sticking up thr...

... Good SOP's are the only way to go - nobody will argue that - and thankfully we've evolved enough to have them, but they are STANDARD operating practices or procedures, not a replacement for common sense, ability, experience, or talent. And you'll find that many, many situations in this game are...

Re: Didn't know Canso's have aft airstairs
CP operated a few Canso's after WW2, and all of them had the airstair door in the tunnel compartment, like that one. CP called 'em LandSeaAirs. There were a couple based on the West Coast and at least one in Quebec, in Val Dor, I believe. The one in the pic also has a diving platform below the LH bl...
