Re: Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

It took awhile, but I did indeed speak with a very helpful inspector at the Calgary office.

Re: Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

So, my results are in; the inspector requested my airplane's file and called me when he got it. Although the aircraft was imported into Canada in 1958 and never changed it's registration other than the CF-/C-F bit, Transport has no records of it AT ALL prior to 1983. The FAA had records right back t...

Re: Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

That's not a bad idea, Jim - I may do that in the future. Just got off the phone with a very helpful Inspector in the Calgary office so hopefully this will pan out. Sure is a trick to actually get a real person on the phone with Transport these days, though.

Re: Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

I was thinking of calling them and seeing what they have to say. What's an ATIP?

Obtaining Aircraft Records from Transport Canada

I recently contacted the FAA and obtained a copy of my aircraft's old FAA records (registrations, maintenance records, bills of sale, etc) and was wondering if I can do the same thing in Canada and if so, who do I contact? Anybody know the procedure? I have no tech records from 1958 to about 1984 ex...

Re: Another Norseman...gone

Hitting water the wrong way is just as abrupt as hitting concrete, and glassy water landings have been wrecking airplanes since the days of Glenn Curtiss. I would doubt age or fatigue played any part in the accident - just my opinion.

Re: Twin otter on the ice

I don't know any experienced Twin Otter operators that have abandoned our hired a heavy lift helicopter because of a station 60. Usually within 2 weeks its patched up enough to ferry it out. I hate to say it but this is typical Military not having the experience to operate these aircraft. Not saying...

Ok - that makes sense because I'd heard of cinder runways being graded periodically. Thanks for the help.

Cinder Runway?

In some of the older books written by guys like Ernest K Gann, etc I've read the occasional reference to a "cinder" runway. Anybody know exactly what that would be? Concrete like, as in "cinder block", or more like a gravel runway, or...?

Re: For the Oldtimers: Chinook Flying Services - Calgary

Thanks Ross, that's really interesting. I would like to speak to Trevor and hear some more about it first hand - I'll PM you my phone number. -KYE would have been around there in the very late sixties, maybe '67 or '68. Interesting that there were a few other -KY* registrations associated with the c...

Re: For the Oldtimers: Chinook Flying Services - Calgary

I have the book and it's highly recommended. Primarily I'm looking for any photos or remembrances of Aeronca Champ CF-KYE from the late sixties as it used to belong to my dad. I'm also curious as to what role the BT-13(s?) played at Chinook.

Re: For the Oldtimers: Chinook Flying Services - Calgary

There is quite a good book about the place written by (I think) one of the McTavish clan. They still had a Champ or two in the late sixties. Not sure when they went out of business or merged into something else or whatever. They also oddly enough had a Vultee BT-13 for awhile but I'm not sure what t...

For the Oldtimers: Chinook Flying Services - Calgary

A question for some of the grey haired veterans; did anyone here ever have anything to do with Chinook Flying Services in Calgary in the late sixties or early seventies? I'm looking for pictures or stories involving any of the Aeronca Champs that the school had.

Taxiways and Snowbanks

Since it's rapidly becoming that time of year, here's a question I'm looking for a reference for: You are taxiing down a taxiway at a controlled, major airport. There was a heavy snowstorm the previous day and plowing has been going on continuously. You are on the centerline of the taxiway and hit a...

A visual illusion question I can't track down -

An aircraft is approaching you head on what will it appear to do as it gets closer.

Len Robinson was another very high timer in the Twin Otter. Bruce Cornack and Ron Sprang also come to mind.

Re: Missing airplane on flight from Penticton to Edmonton

Is anything taught these days in flying school about route considerations, having options, survivability, etc? A couple of years ago two guys here at my home field ferried a -182 across Ontario and were a little intimidated afterwards by the remoteness of some of the country they had to fly across. ...

Re: Project: Parkland Airport - West of Edmonton

We have loons like this at my home airfield as well, but fortunately they seem to be in the single digits. One guy went around to all the houses near the airport with a petition calling for it's closure a few years ago. When he knocked on one door and was met by the lovely young lady living there sh...
