I got word that a friend of mine just got laid off from provincial air, which has me concerned. Are the days of hoping into the right hand seat of a king air 350 or 1900 over??? Am I looking at the ramp for 6 months to a year after my training is complete?

cfs explanations

Does anyone know if there is anywhere else I can get cfs explanations other than the cfs itself. From what I can see our gov. doesn't like to put a lot of effort in to explaining everything that's shown in the examples.

Aresstor cable/ barrier

I am going over some cfs references and came across arrestor cables and barriers, and was wondering if anyone has ever had to to deal with them or have seen them at aerodromes other than military? Are they a common thing?

Was wondering if someone could tell me how important it is to know the difference between all the different wx services. Reason I ask, is because every time you look in the cfs there is always some service there giving the same wx information. Does it matter what service it's being provided from or ...

cpl duration?

Forgive me if this has been posted a million times, I did an extensive search and couldn't find anything.

But as far as duration on a full time basis, how long would you say on average it would take to complete my cpl?
5-6 days a week.

vfr call-up point/checkpoint

In the general section of the cfs there is a note under the vfr call-up point/checkpoint saying "when cleared to orbit the aircraft should remain within 2nm of the call-up/checkpoint in the direction of the arrow...." what arrow are they talking about? I've looked on a few different maps and haven't...

Just out of curiosity - what was your instructor's response to that question?
I've been on hiatus for a while, ran out of money so I haven't been around any instructors.

How many hours per week?

Was wondering if anyone had any advice about how many hours I should fly per week until I am able to get my ppl? I am in the circuits now, and was told that my first solo should be coming up in the next week or so. One of the CFIs at the club said twice a week was ideal, not too much not too little....

Re: Aircraft carriers

I was wondering if anyone knew why aircraft carriers had numbered runways? There is no number on the runway (well, there is only 1 runway) and the ship can turn around, so numbering the runway with the magnetic headings would be useless. The ship has a number (CVN-XX).
