Well, depends if we include the classroom numbers. I'd say the % that pass classroom, training, over 90% checkout once in the field. But yeah 70-80% make it pass the classroom training, in my experience.

Re: Percent that pass

These are by no means, hard numbers, but just what I've heard over the years.

I'd say around 60-70% of VFR Controllers check out, and the check out rate for IFR Controllers is around 20-30%. FSS is around 95%.

Re: Previous ATC schooling any benefit?

Why are you so concerned about hiding your past of being CT'd? Nav won't care. Just be honest, and use good examples from your training in your interview. I know plenty of people who were CT'd in IFR stream and years later made it in FSS or VFR. Just be honest.

Re: FSS staffing levels

I think it's pretty safe to say the staffing is right where they want it right now. I was FSS, failed to cross train successfully into ATC, and was let go in December. They told me there were no immediate positions available in FSS at the moment, but that might change in the future. So based on that...

Thank goodness for that.
Beside's the black hole you sit in while waiting to hear back during the application process, Navcanada training is top notch in my opinion. I've been through FSS and VFR Basic.

Re: Military ATC training with NavCanada

Military runs the training, not NavCanada. It's just in NavCan's building. The accomodations are nice, it's like a hotel. The food isn't bad either, but gets old fast.

An IFR Tower? Uhhhhhh no. You mean a tower that deals with 99% IFR traffic? Cause those exist.

Re: Nav Canada Testing Session

When and where are you writing it? I wrote it a year ago, so the details might be a little fuzzy.... It's about 4-5 hours to write, a series of 10-15 short timed tests. They focus on different areas, spatial reasoning, logic, reading comprehension, math, listening skills, general knowledge, so basic...

Re: VFR Minima in a Control Zone

No one here has really convinced me I am wrong yet...I understand it is the responsibility of the pilot to remain 500 AGL and 500 ft vertically from cloud. But he could do this if the ceiling was below 1000 ft... Here's a scenario. Ceiling 008BKN. If a pilot wants to depart VFR, why can't he? What i...

VFR Minima in a Control Zone

So I was having a friendly debate/discussion with some fellow classmates/controllers the other day, and the topic of VFR minima came up, My argument was, that if the visibility was 3 miles, and the ceiling was 900 feet, a plane requesting to depart VFR could do so, and did not require SVFR authoriza...

Re: Who's all waiting for a training offer?

Aff Training in YVR has been put off until at least September... so I hear... All training in YVR? The last YVR VFR course should be completed in June. I've been told there is an upcoming VFR course in YEG for August...would rather have YVR though. -Hurley Affirmitive... they want to run one more co...

Re: Questions concerning a career in ATC

If someone was from Southern Ontario and wanted to stay there, what are the chances of getting a posting there? Everything InvertedAltitude said is correct, except this. Have you considered what stream of ATC you want into? FSS/VFR/IFR? If you go FSS, be prepared to go west, and north. If you want ...

Re: Is a class action suit warranted against Nav-Canada?

Wait, you want them to add ANOTHER layer of testing to become ATC? Lets see. You write the online test. You write the 6 hour aptitude test in person. Phone interview. In person interview. 3 References/security/medical clearance. Then once you show up. 4-8 tests in which you MUST get over 80%... mult...

Re: Is a class action suit warranted against Nav-Canada?

Do you know why NavCanada has less then 1 loss of separation for every 100,000 IFR movements? Probably has something to do with the fact they only hire the best, and those who can cut it. You think they enjoy investing in people for 6-12 months and then having to CT them when they can't handle the p...
