Re: Converting my FAA IFR rating to Canada

I wrote the test a number of years ago, and I also recall the test being quite easy. Unfortunately I do not remember the types of questions, other than they focused on airspace and regulatory topics where there are differences between Canada and US.

Re: opinion re low oil prices flying the patch......

I've already seen signs of slowing in the oil inustry. I'm aware that two of our clients (Alberta oil/gas producers) have cancelled projects and reduced their capital budgets for 2015 following the recent plunge in oil prices. Speaking of low oil prices, it would be nice to see a similar drop in the...

Re: NavCanada... digital maps... ?

Speaking of AOPA, their new online flight planner (to replace FlyQ) seems pretty good for basic flight planning. As I understand, AOPA bought (begged, stole, or borrowed; idk) the rights to use Jeppesen's JIFP flight planner (which Jepp no longer sells or renews). For the 50 or so bucks a year subsc...

Congrats on the new plane! I've yet to carry a handheld, but am considering getting one as I get back into flying this spring.

Re: Canada VNC Chart Question

When actually flying, I don't recall it being an issue, but during flight planning (in the past), it has added the extra step of having to look up the airport identifier to enter into flight planning software (route generation). Agreed, not a huge deal, but I still wonder why it's not included; at t...

Canada VNC Chart Question

This falls into the category of, "I wonder why they do ..." As we all know, VNC charts in Canada serve the same purpose as sectional charts in the US. One difference that frustrates me, is the lack of the ICAO identifier on airports on VNCs. :? Can't help but wonder what NavCanada's reason is for no...

And there's also a couple classics - "Travellin Man" (Ricky Nelson), and "Come Fly with Me" (Frank Sinatra).

If aerospace can be considered aviation, there's also "Countdown" (Rush), and "Rocket Man" (Elton John)... there's that 80's geek again.

Considering this is a Canadian forum and all, I'm surprised no one else remembered this one:

Re: New Online Flight Planner

I think COPA should do something like this; but will they? I'm not holding my breath. fltplanner.com works well; but personally, I prefer to be able to drag the rubber band along my course of route, and at the end of it, have a navlog that's printable (b/w laser printer) and readable. I find fltplan...

New Online Flight Planner

Just learned a couple weeks back that Jeppesen is cancelling their Internet Flight Planner (JIFP) product in 2015. I'm not exactly sure what the deal is, but AOPA has the rights to the JIFP software engine, and now has a beta-version of "AOPA Internet Flight Planner" (AIFP) on their website. I've tr...

My long-standing concern with GPS

For a number of years now, I have seen more and more GPS approaches published; while at the same time, what seems to be a concerted effort to remove traditional ground-based navaids. The impression I get is that the aviation community is moving steadily in the direction of reliance on GPS (or GPSS i...

Thanks for all the info; I'm also strongly weighing the purchase option, although my preference is shared ownership.

Re: Share/Partner at CYBW?

Thanks for the info. I was not the key person to set up the corporation in Texas, so my knowledge of that process is limited for the US; so even worse for Canada. But, I'm very confident I can figure that part of it out. My biggest concern is the legalities (wrt the CARs) of having a corporation-own...

Share/Partner at CYBW?

I've recently really started thinking seriously about purchasing an airplane, but for various reasons, would prefer to have a shared/partnership arrangement. Before I got my license and instrument rating in the US (Texas), I was very fortunate in that there were several of us at the (small, private)...

Re: Calgary area FBOs

There's even a B&B right at CYBW. Last time I checked, the rates looked quite reasonable. http://www.telusplanet.net/public/tiedown/ If you're hungry when you land, there's a good little restaurant at the Calgary Flying Club (you'll drive right by it if you drive from Springbank Aero). Alternatively...

Re: Lake or Trees?

As others have said (and I apologize, I haven't read ALL the posts in this thread), but it would depend a lot on the kind of trees. Hardwood trees (poplars, oak, etc) have branches that will go right through an aircraft. Pine trees typically have more flex, shorter branches. I'd be real leery of dit...

Re: Loging a foreign flight

As someone who earned their license and instrument rating in the U.S., and transferred said license/rating to Canada, I concur with the previous posters. I had several hours of dual time (done in the U.S.) that I wanted to put towards the dual requirement of the commercial license. I spoke with, and...

Looking for blocktime at CYBW

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right/best place to post this, so feel free to comment. I am looking for blocktime, preferrably out of CYBW. Single engine, four place; a Cherokee 180 would be perfect as I have quite a few hours in them. Any other similar Piper would also be nice. I haven't yet b...

If you're interested in selling block time, let me know - I might be interested, depending upon where you keep the plane.
