Lightspeed PFX ANR Headset Dual GA Plugs
Original owner, selling my Lightspeed PFX Headset. I've kept this headset mainly as a spare should my main headset pack it in during a flight. It is in excellent condition, has dual GA plugs, bluetooth & awesome noise cancelling. Comes with original out-of-box documentation, and hardshell carrying c...

Re: Engine Oil Mysteriously Increased
Are you sure the dipstick is the same one ? I know of one case were a dipstick was inadvertently swapped between 2 engine models during maintenance. The markings were not the same. After the overhaul the dipstick has a yellow-painted cap and that is still the same. As for the markings stamped into ...

Re: Engine Oil Mysteriously Increased
I didn't smell any gas in the oil when I checked, but will be sure to do that next time I'm at the hangar. The engine was only recently overhauled (50 hours ago now) so I tend to rule out gasoline in the oil. @pilotDar, thanks for the note; I was hoping there might have been something after the over...

Re: Engine Oil Mysteriously Increased
@Ahramin, No, I didn't think there was, after 8 years' owning this plane it's never happened before. I'm familiar with the dipstick effect of the longer the engine sits after the last run the higher the oil goes up the stick. This looks like a gusher of oil by comparison! One data point I forgot to ...

Re: Engine Oil Mysteriously Increased
@Photofly - thank you, no that's not it. I've been watching the dipstick like a kid waits for Christmas morning to see how many hours I get out of a quart after the recent overhaul. I anticipated adding a quart myself the next time I went flying, but it appears someone, or some-thing, beat me to it....

Engine Oil Mysteriously Increased
This will sound like a weird question, but can the engine oil suddenly increase by 1/2 quart? I’ve been checking oil consumption before every flight and it was down to 5.1 qt and I was going to top it up after that flight. The next time I went flying the oil was suddenly at 5.6 quarts or so. I own t...

Re: Question About Engine Corrosion and Spalling
Yeah, I've owned it for 7 and it's not shown any signs of needing attention yet, based on the same MO that you follow, at least since I've owned it. It's a prop strike that has influenced the decision to get the overhaul done (not me flying at the time) - and a stupid one, taking out a taxiway light.

Re: Question About Engine Corrosion and Spalling
OK, thanks for the insights. Sounds like it's possible to have spalling without seeing much evidence of it in the oil or the filter - to me that says the particles of metal coming off the cams must be very small to go unnoticed and the process must have taken a long time - which I suppose is possibl...

Question About Engine Corrosion and Spalling
My engine is in for overhaul and an initial report indicates there was some spalling and corrosion internally - no futher details than that at the moment. The engine is a Lycoming O-360. Over the 7 years I've owned the plane, I've changed the oil every 4 months, opened the oil filter and searched fo...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
Never assume a new gasket was used:) Those exhaust nuts need to be retorqued. If not you will soon be pulling the exhaust, redoing the mating surfaces and putting a new gasket in there. That should be corrected because if the gasket burns out then you have a loose exhaust etc.. Very unpleasant. Cri...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
Most gasket materials will "seat" after 1-2 heat-cool cycles and will need to be retorqued ( important with a new engine ) Then, I would suggest no more than once a year to check for torque on all the nuts/bolts firewall forward. I would even go as far as checking the torque on the crankcase mating...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
That's very common. Most of those bolts will take a 1/4 turn every now and then. Have your mechanic go around the sump attach bolts and case 1/2 bolts and torque them down. Those things are worth checking every time you drop the cowl or change the oil. I thought you could only torque down gasket-se...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
I had some help from a friend - last weekend (Sept 18th) we cleaned off the oil from as many places as we could reach using a long artist's paint brush (14") and some rags. For parts the rags couldn't reach my friend's air compressor was handy for drying the mineral spirits and oil. Later it felt dr...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
I've got an update on this topic. In the summer I use Aeroshell 100+ and in the cooler months I switch to Aeroshell 80+. It always seemed like oil consumption was worse in the summer but I never had any way to quantify it. Sometimes it seemed OK and other times it seemed bad - didn't make sense. Thi...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
It sounds straightforward but there's rubber everywhere so spray carefully, use Varsol or Mineral Spirits, I assume some wiping is necessary but will be hard to do in the remote parts of the engine, otherwise allow the solvent to dry naturally. Don't use gasoline (does anyone remember the guy at Cam...

Re: Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
@Ahramin - Understood. However the AME is not responsible for the airworthiness of my aircraft; I want to learn as much about my aircraft as possible and this is a good opportunity to diagnose what is, by all accounts, a particularly elusive problem. This forum advertises itself as a place to discus...

Seeking Advice on Diagnosing Oil Consumption
Oil consumption on my 1969 Cardinal seems to be on the increase. It used to be 1 quart every 5 to 6 hours or more but it has dropped below 1 in 5 hours. Besides the dipstick level dropping faster than usual, the only other symptom is a lot of oil on the inside of the engine cowling on the pilot's si...

Re: Citation down North of Kelowna
The lack of CVR in general is really frustrating but the overall FDR / CVR abilities are terrible. In a world with super light and condensed flash storage it's really too bad every commercial aircraft doesn't have one. Most CVR's only have 2 hours of storage... cmon there is no reason it can't have...

Re: ELT Died, Need to Replace
Yeah, I'm done with the Ameri-King so it'll be another brand. Artex and Kannad both get good reviews - although the amount of information about ELTs and reviews of ELTs is pretty minimal compared to the usual avionics. ACK has also caught my eye and I might Take one for the team and get their E04 Up...

I'm curious how sensitive that overhaul price is to the exchange rate. The $ now is a lot lower than it was when this thread was started and I think most/all parts need to come from the U$A

OMG - don't be afraid to say how you really feel! That's quite a piece of footage - I was already thinking he was pretty P.O'd making a 5 minute video condemning the Ameri-King - the last 30 seconds is priceless, LMFAO Thanks for posting, both, I feel lucky having had 6 years out of this unit! ELT Died, Need to Replace
My Cardinal's in for the annual inspection and ELT check. I got a call from the Avionics tech telling me my Ameri-King AK-451 had zero power output on 121.5 and 245 and no modulation on 406 MHz. Odd - but I never took advantage of the top-of-the-hour timeslot for testing it so my bad for letting it ...

Re: Cirrus ditching off Maui, 25 Jan 2015: Pilot OK
It went well, but there must have been a lining up of the stars just a little for him to have been close to the cruise ship and for that eye-in-the-sky to be watching. I wonder: - What he was thinking while he was waiting to hit the water - How much he pays for a ticket from 400 Mi away to complete ...
