Re: amphibian aircraft and known icing

I flew an Amphib caravan in the northern Quebec back in October 2006. The icing was a problem it built up on the gear legs and floats fast and with no means to shed it. The only option is to land and use "the bucket". Not fun...

Re: Floatplane in high winds/heavy waves

Sabourin definitely has enough room to put up the big waves in 25 to 40 knot winds as were the conditions that day. It's 1.5 nm of water with a southwest wind. It's also a fairly shallow lake. The island is only 500' wide (the long way) and I have swam out to it many a time from the dock. The island...

Re: Survival Gear

I got lost in the bush in an April snowstorm a long time ago. We parked in the middle of the lake and walked to the water's edge, jumped an iceberg and pushed it the last 20' to shore. We had 2 tarps, 3 cans of Spork, and axe, hunting knifes and several lighters. We started a fire, cut some pine bou...

It's 200 years since the war of 1812-1814 ended. Maybe we better start it back up and straighten out this border issue

Re: Log Book

I still use the paper ones. They are 3 years behind but I have not been flying too much so it won't take long to fix that. If you are planning to fly commercially, I'd get a big one. I have 5 books. The last 2 were the big ones which last a long time. Unlike the electronic books you can't erase them...

Re: Only in Russia

Back in 1990, I got stuck in about 2 feet of slush while turning a bit wide on skis. The local aboriginals came to help me out. I had one ski-doo tied to each gear leg, 6 people pushing the struts, and me running the engine as fast as I safely could  We got out. Lucky it was only a Cessna 180. ...

Re: Beech 18 on floats.

Hey Chuck, I've got 2.2 hours on TDB (the big dog). I flew it with Dave at Eagle Aviation in Pine Falls in 1992. I did notice the wobbly floats while landing in a crosswind that day. Dave always beat me to the dock except the time he left 20 minutes before me for Red Sucker Lake, went on top, and th...

Re: Accident rate statistics

Pretty much what others have said, GA is quickly escaping the financial grasp of the middle class in today's economy. I agree with that. I bought my first airplane when I was 21 back in 1987. It was an Aeronca 90HP Champ. I flew it 190 hrs in 19 months, then sold it. Back then, I could afford to fl...

I checked out the website and educated myself. It looks interesting and it possibly may be a good thing. Who knows? They haven't done much so far because they are not yet approved by the government. But if they are certified, they could back a guy up in court if it came down to it. My mother was a n...

I've never liked unions and in the past, I have quit a job to "lose" the teamsters. One time, they wanted me to vote to strike for a .23/hr wage increase. I voted alright... What I'd be worried about is that they would come up with some crazy pay table based on gross weight of the aircraft, with the...

Re: Would you buy a flying car?

I still like the Moller thing better with it's VTOL. It's very fast (if it every gets to production). Unfortunately, with the proposed $200,000 to $750,000 price tag, I'll just watch the rich guys fly it. But a flying car better be really fast in the air to make the pricetag worth-while. I like the ...

Most guys don't like to post pictures because we don't like Transport to get ahold of them. Probably 50% of the outfits I've worked for had external load paperwork. The other ones just hauled it as it had been done since Orville and Wilbur... I recently had a buddy get stopped for hauling 16" 2 x 8s...

Re: Fair pay.

In the bush I blame the poor wages partly on the turbines. A PZL piston otter that I used to fly sold for $800,000 on floats. Then the new owner spent a huge bundle to put in a turbine. That money could have been used to give the pilot a pay increase  Cost of maintenance on the piston engi...

Bush Flying was my second choice and I enjoyed it for many years. Last week I was lucky enough to put in 25 hours on an Amphib Caravan up in Northern Sask. But I'd pick fighter pilot over that or preferably spraying crops in Columbia with an OV-10
