Re: Don Cherry - A Great Canadian Pecked By A Thousand Sparr

That way I could understand personal attacks more clearly Easy. When a right-wing person makes a personal attack, that's bad, because he's right-wing and he must always be wrong, regardless of the merits of his argument. When a left-wing person makes a personal attack, that's good, because he's lef...

Re: Don Cherry - A Great Canadian Pecked By A Thousand Sparr

What I find hypocritical though is than when somebody left wing speaks their mind all of a sudden freedom of speech isn't such a good thing to people like Foggy I'm amazed you can take that position with a straight face. Pot, meet kettle. Left-wing people are the least liberal people you will ever ...

Re: Radio & GPS for a J3

the frozen battery One trick I've seen people do, is to carry a small sealed +12V battery (like you would use on a motorcycle) with them, and use it to power the GPS, radio, etc. Something like this: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/atphighpwr.php Put it in a carrying bag with one of t...

Re: first aircraft

Very rough numbers: Let's say you drop $40k on the aircraft. Using the rule of thumb that it will only increase half that in value (which often isn't true - there's no such thing as a $300k C150, regardless of how much $$$ you drop on it). So you're out $20k. Let's say you fly it for 500 hours befor...

Re: first aircraft

You never got the money out of a plane that you put into it Now, that doesn't mean that you should never overhaul your engine or install new avionics in it. However, if you do, be prepared to fly it for at least 500 hours to amortize your expense. The more you spend, the longer you need to fly it. ...

skip piston, go cheyenne
Being turbine powered, don't you need a CAR 604/POC and all the overhead that it entails? What's the wait time for a POC now? Six months? A year?

Re: # 1,000,000 and other boring stuff

Mine started 055 My father's "new" six digit file number starts with 035. Generally, any number starting with a zero is probable cause for yanking your medical - Transport doesn't like old pilots to commit aviation. The current six digit numbering system is fairly recent - my father's original lice...

Re: first aircraft

trade-a-plane a good indication of canadian pricing No. Canadian prices for identical aircraft are FAR above US prices, for various reasons. Hence the recent increase in imports, which works if you know what you are doing, and costs you time and $$$ if you don't. Any Canadian aircraft seller would ...

Re: Opinions on the Continental IO-240 engine

From SDR # 20050915001: Merely replacing one component after another until the problem goes away is not an acceptable method of troubleshooting Reminds me about a decade ago, a very large and prestigious flight school had a rough-running engine on a twin. Their very large and prestigious AMO changed...

Re: Flight Training Plan Question

You cannot land an aircraft until you can precisely control it in continuously decreasing slow flight with unbelievable precision - minus zero, plus one foot vertically, +/- 5 feet laterally and +/- 5 degrees of yaw. People don't really have problems landing. They have problems flying precisely. No ...

Re: Radio & GPS for a J3

For radio, all you need is a decent external antenna and batteries for a handheld.

For nav, all I use is the GPS in my phone. I'm cheap, so I downloaded blackstar for free, and it works great.

See flowchart in App F referenced by 7.4.4 - major mods are NOT rubber stamped by TC! Read note (d).

Again, this is one of the many painful and expensive lessons you learn during your first 10 imports.

Re: Advice

A thousand hours of private flying driving around in your C 150 is not going to impress Disagree. Hours are hours. Look at the job ads, and it's all about hours in your logbook. Someone that's spent 1000 hours flying a 150 all over North America has gained a heck of a lot of real-world experience t...

Re: Advice

Importing an aircraft from the USA hings upon the FAA form 337's which you can request for any N-reg aircraft for $10 from the FAA. If there are any murky 337's which describe complicated or mysterious damage, or modifications that are not supported by an STC, walk away. Or if there is physical evid...

My choice would actually be a Cherokee 235 Yes, but what about the 50 hour dual insurance checkout requirement from a current flight instructor with at least 10 hours on the exact type? Just kidding! If you're flying off pavement, a hershey-bar wing Cherokee gives a lot of bang for the buck....

Re: Canada should have a castle doctrine

A friend of mine from North Carolina explained to me their law:

You can kill someone breaking into your house, but you can't kill them after they've broken in.

So, everyone in NC shoots the intruder, then drags them back to the door. Keeps the politicians happy, I suppose.

I'm still struggling with "Cherokee" and "checkout" being in the same sentence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_PA-28_Cherokee#Development Karl Bergey, Fred Weick and John Thorp designed the Cherokee You may recall that Fred Weick pioneered the tricycle landing gear and designed the foolproof Erc...

Re: Twin Bonanza - anyone flown one?

Thanks for the kind offer, but there's a Flight Manual in the Twin Bonanza. Did a quick review, and off I went. Flew very nicely. Throwover control column, brakes only on left side. No rudder pedals on right side - but there were another set in the center - go figure. Started easy. Took off. Non-sup...
