Re: Best company for commuters?
Canadian North! Only have to do the commute 1-2 times a month. And the company gives a decent allowance to commute!

Re: Uflymike with Sony xm5
I have the A20 and did the QC35/UFlyMike combo as a backup. My A20 is now my backup. Love the UFlyMike! That is saying a lot because the A20 is a fantastic setup. It’s just my second choice

Re: Canadian North
I can’t speak for the YYC or YEG bases, but I believe our most junior YOW 737 skipper is at about 7 years. I would venture to guess that YYC/YEG are around the same. ATR Captains are being hired off the street at the moment. We have some 25-30 year ATR Captains who love YZF or the YOW/YFB rotational...

Re: Canadian North
Lots of great info above from Aspired. The only thing I would add is that the ATR Sept is presently hiring direct entry Captains now; something that is quite rare and has only recently happened in the 16 years I’ve been here. The quality of life is great if you don’t mind living in YZF (on the ATR)....

Re: PPC + Type rating
Captain must be PPC’d. FO can be PCC’d (as the 200 is certified in Canada as a single pilot machine). Also depends on how SOP’s/FOM/Ops Specs are laid out…because of this, the FO may indeed need to be PPC’d as well.

Aspired, We’re seeing a huge hiring spree happen at the moment- I suppose you could say that now is the time to get in; much like other organizations. An area that I believe we excel is our lifestyle. I am YZF-based and I would guess that our normal line pilots average about 25 nights/month at home ...

Canadian North has a pretty good lifestyle. Home most nights and the money is good. Jumpseat/Staff travel program and other standard benefits. Bases in YYC/YEG/YZF/YOW. PM with any questions!

Re: Captains of the North, what makes you stay?
Short answer: there is something in it for everyone who stays. Though I don’t do rotational work up here, life is good. Everything is 15 minutes away, I can bid my schedule to be home 27-28 days per month on average (unless you want to do training or out of town work). That applies to junior folks t...

Re: Move to Yellowknife?
Born here, but stayed and love it. It’s expensive, but it’s all relative: you can substitute teach on your days off (no qualifications required, just a criminal records check), and make over $300/day to supplement income if desired. Gas is $1.50, but we typically only drive 8-10k per year. Probably ...

Didn’t realize that! Thanks for pointing that out for anyone flying pistons.…but its not good enough for piston airplanes. It does a weird thing on takeoff where it can’t keep up and cycles on and off.

Re: David Clark Headsets
If you’re planning on flying for a long time, don’t cheap out on a headset. I currently use a Bose QC35 (non ‘aviation’), with a UFly Mic/adaptor, and find it super lightweight and more comfortable than the Bose A20 that I purchased many years ago (it also happens to be about half the price which wa...

Re: Rapid Testing and Travel Ban
I think what a lot of people are missing, is that many of these tests will not provide an accurate result when symptoms are not presenting. Example- you contact COVID the day before you travel ‘home’. You could do ten rapid tests on your travel day, and it’s highly unlikely that any will yield a pos...

Check with your ALPA Rep. Typically one of the requirements of jumpseat travel is a RAIC and a Company ID...neither of which would be valid if you are furloughed unfortunately.

It is an ATC assigned altitude in a radar controlled environment. If one were to cold weather correct a MA altitude, should we start cold weather correcting a SID altitude as well (rhetorical)?

Re: Anxiety past. Do I have any chance of getting Cat 1 Medical?
Make an appointment to do your medical. Discuss it with your Doc. They are qualified to make the call.
If they say no- it’s probably for the best.
If they say yes- you’re good to go.
Honesty is usually the best policy.

I’ve had the QC25/Ufly combo for about three months. I had an issue with the mic cutting out last week, so I emailed them to see if they had any suggestions. I then received a quick response apologizing, and a tracking number for the new mic that they had just sent. It arrived 3 days later (pretty i...

My family lives in Margaree. The summers I’ve spent there yielded spotty cell coverage at best (their house is about a three minute drive from the airport). Dave at the Port Hawksbury FBO would be able to hook you up (and it’s about an hour and a half to Margaree from there by road). PM with any que...
