Re: Buying a Cessna 150/152

The other side of the coin is the story of a fellow I met once that bought a beater C 150 with an on condition engine to use to build up his time. He bought it for "only" 18 K but after only 20 hours the engine started running very roughly. When the AME pulled the screen it was full of metal, the e...

Re: Airplane blue book (value estimator)

+1 for the Pipistrel. I got a ride in a virus recently and was impressed enough with it that I could even be persuaded to look the other way because of the relatively tight fit for my 6'1" frame. I saw for myself a cruise of 140+ KIAS at ~4GPH mogas on downwind at CYCW, I got to see the awesome 14:1...

Re: C-172 Airframe Questions

The aileron rod ends should not have any play, but they should rotate freely.(sometimes you will get some lateral, but should be no raidal play) Right - that's what I meant to say - relatively easy to rotate with a firm metallic click at the stopping point. I would highly recommend getting a proper...

Cessna Adding Corrosion/Fatigue Inspection for Aging A/C

Interesting story out by Avweb yesterday - Cessna will be updating the service manuals for their 100 and 200 series aircraft which were manufactured between 1946 and 1986. I think the 1986 cutoff date is because a/c manufactured after that had primer on the interior aluminum surfaces. The story from...

C-172 Airframe Questions

I went to look at a C-172 for sale over the weekend. I basically did a walkaround and found a couple of things and was wondering how costly they are to put right, but even more, whether they are signs of a plane that may not have been maintained well. - Elevator Outboard Hinges If you hold the eleva...

Re: Significant Difference in Mtce Costs Piper 140/C-172?

Thanks for the replies! I'm surprised that Cessna parts would beat the cost on Piper ones - are these parts generally salvaged from high time machines or are we talking about new parts here?

Significant Difference in Mtce Costs Piper 140/C-172?

After a lot of looking around my search has narrowed - big surprise - to the C-172 and PA-28-140/151... I was wondering whether there are any significant differences in the cost to maintain these two types. I've heard Cessnas have an edge but don't know if it's true and how much of an edge if it is....

Re: FAA gives approval for flying car (link to video)

Here's an update, released sometime this month - runs just over 9 minutes and is a nice recap of the program with some footage of the car/plane. http://www.ted.com/talks/anna_mracek_dietrich_a_plane_you_can_drive.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TEDTalks_video+%28TEDTa...

Re: The best model C-172

If cost is your main concern, stick with the C-172. just checked at ZBB and full service avgas is 1.95/litre. For an ~8GPH C-172 you're looking at $60/hr, or about $7.60/hour/gallon. The bigger machines suggested so far on this thread will burn between 10 and maybe 14 gph for an hourly burn of betwe...

If I have one complaint about The Aviators it's that each episode is too short!

Re: PCAS: Zaon XRX

I finally got one just recently after months (possibly over a year) of going back and forth looking for info on its usefulness. Heres what I can tell you so far. Cons: On approach to Burlington the other day (which can get quite busy) it picked up a Bonanza 3nm away, but was late in detecting a C15...

5 Minute Airventure 2011 Vid.

I found this link on the Air Monkeys website - it's a very nice summary of Airventure 2011, well produced, use full screen for optimum effect.

Cheers,

For those of us who missed it, I noticed that The Dambusters Fly Again is repeated twice later today on the History Channel, 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM here in Vancouver.

51 Takeoffs in 2 Minutes

Timelapse video clip, about 1 hour compressed into 2.5 minutes. Quite a ballet between the planes taking off and the ones they have to wait for. Cool to see the trajectories of the departing planes too. http://gizmodo.com/5803750/watching-51-airplanes-taking-off-in-just-two-minutes-is-mesmerizing Ed...

Re: Cessna Maintenance

In the lists above, just checking. When you say "bi-annually" in the lists above you mean every 2 years, not twice a year, right? Asking because in the same list the transponder check is listed as "every 2 years" which is also bi-annually.

Gulfstream 650 Down - 4 Dead

Some really unpleasant news just in from Avweb: A Gulfstream 650 test aircraft went down near Roswell, NM killing all four people aboard. According to the Savannah Morning News, the plane, which is in the final stages of certification flight testing, crashed at the airport. The accident killed two p...
