Phone Interviews

This was a couple of years ago, with Island Air (Hawaii), and I didn't get the job (@#$#%^& it!) They asked about my previous experience, and the FARs (U.S. remember), and a bunch of sceanario (Capt smells like alcohol, Goes below mins) Stuff like that. They weed out the undesarables (and those that...

Eclipse Gear Up

One of the remarks put out by Eclipse was something to the effect of "Now we can prove how easy Stir-Friction components are to repair!"

Gotta love a positive attitude!

Gord

Never landed gear up, don't plan to either!

Air Violence

The FAA has nothing to do with aviation websites. That and the fact the guy running the site is in sweden. (My co-worker sent him some pictures of us in a J-3 Cub and e-mailed him a few times, so YES, I do know what I am talking about!)

Might be something as simple as he didn't pay his bill.......

TSA

Good Stories, heres mine.... I live in the United States, but being a foreign (Canadian, eh?) I have to go through this everytime too. My fingerprints were taken when I did my application for resident status. Even did the fancy electronic ones. To get training for my King Air 350 type rating, I had ...

Renewal

I talked to TC about renewing my expired Class I last time I was in Saskatoon. They said, with a valid american IFR I was exempt from having to do the INRAT written, but still had to do a flight test. My american IFR is kept current by my 135 checkrides every 4 months or so. We staggered the aircraf...

Hawker 800XP

Just found out I am going to Flight Safety in mid-July for Hawker school. Anyone out there with hint and tips on flying this thing? I have a bit of King Air (90 and 350) time, but no jet. I bought a bootleg manual off eBay. Printing it out now and will read up before school starts. The schedule says...

Courtesy Cars

Agreed that not every FBO can afford to have a courtesy car, but a ride for lunch should be offered. The Aerocenter in YYC said they didn't have cars anymore. Luckily Tim Hortons is only a few blocks away. The Monterey Jet Center (California) has 3 courtesy cars, and a van to give rides. I have used...

Caribbean Licence

Hi It has been a couple of years, but.... I set a photocopy of my canadian licence, twotter PPC, and a couple of pages of my logbook, and when I got to Sint Maarten, the validation was waiting for me. It was only good for one year and couldn't be renewed. When the year ended, I had to do two exams, ...

Saba's Runway

I think Saba is called the "shortest runway with scheduled traffic". I flew out of there (with Winair) in '98-2000. If I remember right, it is 1342 feet from cliff to cliff. The runway painted on it is about 1100 feet. On a 35C day, no wind, 18 pax and full bags, it IS a short strip. We actually had...

Groundspeed

I have seen 400 kts on the king Air 350 one day from HQM to MHR at FL310.

Best though was 212 kts in a Twotter (and this was on Whell/Skis) going to Pelly Bay. Of course, coming home was at about 95 kts....

Pilot lifestyle

I am a pilot because I can't handle a real job!

Honestly, if I had to work 9 to 5 in a little cubicle, I would go postal.

There is nothing better then the view out my window at FL 310, even if its at 3 am and covered in ice (thankfully doesn't happen a lot in California!)

Headsets

Have a pair of DC 20-10s that I have used for nearly 10 years. 10-30 for back ups.

We have BOSE NC hardwired into the King Air 350s, but I keep pissing of the boss and unplugging them to use my DCs. Those BOSE just aren't comfortable. Get a pain right on top of my head after 15 minutes

Working in the U.S.

Hi All I agree with LJdriver. There is much more corporate activity here in the U.S. than back home. The number of aircraft here in California is staggering. There may be more pilots, but there are a lot more aircraft too. I agree with the living in the U.S. part too. To quote Obelix (Asterix and Ob...

Instruments

Hi

I think you are thinking about Pitot-Static System check that needs to be done every 2 years.

The instruments don't have to be serviced unless there is something wrong with them ie. excessive precession, won't erect, etc.

Hope that helps...

I have had a pair of Davy 20-10 for the past 10 years. I think they are comfortable to wear and have been used everywhere from Manitoba to Resolute to the Caribbean to California. The only problem I have had was a leaking gel earseal. Which Davy replaced for free! We have Bose hardwired in the King ...

Actual IFR

I log only time spent in the cloud (or approximate anyway). I heard somewhere that your actual should only be about 10% of your total anyway. Any more than that is a little hard to believe unless you live in a permanent bad weather place. When I flew in the caribbean, any night flight had to filed a...
