Why is avgas not cheaper?

I saw mogas at 63c/litre yesterday. Oil prices have fallen to half very roughly.

Yet I do not see even a small dent in avgas prices in Canada or nearby places in the US northeast.

Why is that?

Non-essential border crossing banned

With the border crossing stopped (reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ5bN4zDneU), how does this work for GA? If you call to notify arrival, customs will disallow you from flying? I'm not planning to fly south anytime soon, but I was hoping to later in summer. If this ban continues, can a GA...

AME course/license for ones own aircraft

The lack of a license prevents me from doing more than elementary work on my aircraft, except for my homebuilt. Is it worth getting the course done with the intention of just working on your own aircraft? From what I gather, it is the 48 months of apprenticeship experience that gets in the way. If I...

Radio license

I've been a PPL for almost 10 years. I remember getting my radio license years back. I realized that it is not a requirement for a PPL in Canada. This is echoed in the Copa guide to buying airplanes as well. At what point does one need a radio license? Is it when you cross the border, or upgrade to ...

Aircraft financing

I'm about to purchase a bigger aircraft than what I've been using, one that costs significantly more. I'm considering the funding sources of aircraft financing companies, or a fixed term HELOC. Aircraft financing seems to come with higher interest rates, a rigid payment system (HELOC fixed term is a...

Re: Ethiopian Airlines: 'No survivors' on crashed Boeing 737 max

I keep hearing that this is a training issue, but to me (single engine private) it is scary to hear that a procedure has to be in the checklist to be performed. If runaway trim happened in a Bonanza or Seminole, I certainly wont read the checklist before disabling the autopilot first and then manual...

Re: Ethiopian Airlines: 'No survivors' on crashed Boeing 737 max

What bugs me about all these groundings is that there isn't even a grace period. Any flights in the air now can complete the trip, but if one is scheduled to leave in an hour? Pax are screwed. Yes, that's what grounded means. Yes, I'm only stupid, not a complete moron. I know what grounding means, ...

Re: That Smooth Landing

I would keep the 'hold it off as long as possible' advice intact. I kept getting bouncy landings and porpoised 2-3 times in my grumman before I realized keeping the nosewheel at about 2-3 feet above runway makes for good landings. The grumman is much more pitch-sensitive than cessnas. I've never had...

Re: 125 PIC hours required for issuing ATPL.

I really hope there aren't ATPLs out there flying PX with 125 hours PIC in IMC. In fact I really hope it is somewhat above 1000 hours PIC, with many of those hours not strictly for getting the license. This is quite comparable to a certain truck driver in a certain part of SK with very low hours who...

Thanks guys, these comments validate my thoughts on the technical reasons why the flights were cancelled. I thought I was missing something in the WX forecasts. It's all just capacity planning.

Pearson cancellations

Reading up for IFR before doing the actual course, and comparing it to real-world scenarios, I have a question. Southern Ontario is being hit with snow all over and many YYZ flights got cancelled. Through the day I was staring at YYZ GFA, METARS/TAF, RVR, prog charts etc. I'm not sure specifically w...

Oxygen questions

Planning for an aircraft upgrade, my future Bonanza will have a service ceiling between 17000 and 21000. This makes me wonder about oxygen systems. As a diver, I know it can't be as simple as strap on a mask with 95% oxygen (up from 21%) and everything is fine. Too much oxygen can make your head spi...

Re: New Pilot owns plane looking for suggestions.

It almost sucked to see someone suggest circuits. I pushed my grumman (150 equivalent) as far as I could. I've been to Bahamas 3 times, Turks n Caicos and Mexico. I've flown over more than half of US states and was limited by only vacation days. You don't need experience before flying further away a...

Re: Multi Block time

Adding to this: I'd be interested in block times but not anytime soon (not in the next 1-2 years). When I do, it will likely be in multiple 10-hour blocks. I've flown to Bahamas, Mexico and warmer parts of USA and want to take more people with me while building the hours. So beside cost it will also...

Re: Grumman Yankee

Disclaimer: I'm selling one :) I cut my teeth on one after my PPL because I found a really good deal. I wasn't looking for an AA1, just a cheaper 172 at the time. I've flown to Bahamas the last two winters and to Mexico doing a full north american trip. It's pretty much a faster and cooler looking 1...

Re: How much does airplane insurance cost?

I pay $250/yr for a Grumman AA1 third party only (listed for sale in the sale section). The insurance covers Bahamas and Mexico and I've been to both countries and lots of USA as well in the last few years. Not that anyone checks for insurance. Do you guys know how much a Bonanza liability insuance ...

Continental O-200 overhaul

I have a Continental O-200A sitting on a pallet for 4 years waiting on my homebuild CH750 to be completed. It came from a Cessna damaged in a storm. The damage did not extend to the engine, nose or prop. My original plan was to mount it and test run a few times with borescope/compression checks when...

Re: bahamas trip any suggestions

co-joe: I didnt start the thread but I'll bite. I flew from Burlington, ON to Bahamas in the Novembers of the last two years. This was in a tiny Grumman AA1. Its amazing how quickly the temperature changes. The jacket comes off south of PA and in WV the sweater came off. The first thing you notice i...
