Assuming you're GA, I think Ottawa is a pretty good place.

I think it was a Cherokee, that attempted take off at Rockcliffe with the cowl plugs still inserted. Over the summer.grimey wrote:jpilot77 wrote:I'd be shocked if i haven't missed one.
Certainly a lot of accidents and incidents in the last little while.

Re: transponder question
In talking with my AME he suggested that if last time I did corelation I had issues, it might just well be worth replacing the unit. Question: Can I purchase a Garmin GTX 327 and it be a "drop in" replacement to the old clunker? RT-359A (Cessna 300) transponder. Ie: Can I use the same shelf, and wir...

Re: Flying Beyond Engine TBO
To me they looked fine, but the shop told me there was a bit of corrosion in them. Cylinders were grinded, new rings installed, new camshaft, new pushrods, new lifters, new gear in the oil pump.

I tie-down in the grass, but I keep an engine cover on in winter, and plugs in summer.

Re: Flying Beyond Engine TBO
1) when you pull the prop through, one cylinder goes "whoosh" I've got one cylinder that does make some kind of small squeal when I pull the prop, not sure if I ever brought it up to my AME though. Been like that since I've owned the plane, which includes a tear down/repair/rebuild last year. What ...

transponder question
Hey all, My plane is going into annual soon. Currently I have a Cessna 300 transponder, one of these clunkers: http://www.bennettavionics.com/rt359a.html (not entirely sure this is the exact model but it looks the same). At last calibration test, I was told it was pretty iffy. The last time I flew i...

I've *heard* that Dan is doing some teaching in North Bay and may end up there perhaps permanently bringing up his family and closing up shop in Ottawa.

avionics shop in/near Ottawa
I've heard that the current shop in Ottawa may not be around much longer and that leaves us in a pickle for getting ELT and transponder certs. Aside from the big player, are there any other shops around or anyone know of anyone coming in to fill the void?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: Tires
I've been looking at replacing my tires. If I may, I'd like to add a few questions: 1) is there a difference in performance/usage of tube vs tubeless tires? 1b) can tubeless tires be used in place of tube tires? 2) is there an "age" limit on tires? Or is the only real limit wear and cords? What abou...

Re: Calling taxiing on 126.7 at uncontrolled airports?
I fly out of an uncontrolled airport and I must say, I find nothing more annoying and absolutely useless than ground calls. For three main reasons: 1. If the airport is busy, we dont want these calls tying up the frequency. Someone calling final or other circuit traffic is way more important than so...

Re: Best places you guys and gals have flown too
Firstly, grats on getting yourself a Grumman. Look up the AYA (www.aya.org) and join up. Their next convention is Saint Simon's Island, Georgia, next year in May. That should give you quite the fun trip. Depending on where you are in Canada, give the maritimes/Newfoundland a try. Absolutely beautifu...

Re: cessna 172 landing light
Do you need an STC or any other paperwork to replace a filament bulb with an LED/HE one? Is this something that could fall under elementary maintenance? I assume even the landing light falls under the definition of a light bulb? (17) removal and replacement of fuses, light bulbs and reflectors; (ame...

electrical woes
Lately I've had two electrical hickups. The first, is the accessory jack (aka: cigarette lighter). It has an in-line fuse (forget the amperage atm) and this fuse keeps blowing as soon as I turn on the master switch. Doesnt matter whether something is plugged into the jack or not. The second issue, i...

I called them up for a quote, and the number I was given was a fair amount more expensive than somewhere else. When I told the guy this on the phone, and asked him if he could rework his numbers or match quotes, he said plainly said no. That was the end of my experience with them.

Re: Any one ever flown/owned a grumman traveler
I have to post a comment here. I own an AA1 Yankee since 07 and it was the first plane I purchased with about 120TT at the time, coming from the 150/152/172 world. I had absolutely no problems with the plane. On the accident side of things, I've recently "completed" a thorough listing of all Grumman...

NTSB accident reports and airport-data.com
Hey guys, Over the course of the last few days/weeks, I've been working on documenting a list of all American Aviation (Grummans, AA1 family) based on data I've found on the web. For the most part, I've compiled the list based off information on http://www.airport-data.com/ doing manufacturer search...

Re: What's included in an annual
TC doesn't have a list for your aircraft. Is this not a good search for applicable ADs? http://www.tc.gc.ca/aviation/applications/cawis-swimn/awd-lv-cs1401.asp Thats what I've used and based myself off of. As well as references from type club, but the list I got from there was complete, as far as I...

Re: Years Between Overhauls
The aircraft I purchased in 2005 had at the time around 280 hours on the engine, the overhaul being done in 93. Cylinder wasnt pulled during pre-purchase though, I didnt think about it. I still havent overhauled the engine but this past annual, I had to get it repaired. The AME (likely) broke a stud...

I've gotten the engine back from the shop, they replaced the camshaft, lifters, pushrods, piston rings, and one of the gears in the oil pump (as well as a few other odds and ends) Turned out to be a lot more expensive than the quote I got from them originally, all because of the rings. Im finding ou...

Re: O-235 corroded camshaft; advice
I got to talk to my AME again, and called up Leavens as well (first). This is what I was told: From Leavens: They said likely the reason my AME pulled the cylinder is because he broke a 'stud'. A new camshaft would be about 700 dollars, 800 dollars for a set of new lifters (8), 230 dollars for new c...

Re: O-235 corroded camshaft; advice
Ok Im drafting a list of questions I should ask my AME about: - Why did you have to pull the cylinder for the exhaust? - Which cylinder did you pull? - What did you see inside, you mentioned corroded camshaft, how severe, and what else was bad? - Did anything show up on the pressure screen? - Did an...

Re: O-235 corroded camshaft; advice
I went to see the plane today. All cylinders were on the engine but it appeared that #1 cylinder may have been the one removed. The nuts holding the cylinder to the crankcase looked like they had some wet oil on them whereas all other nuts - and these ones previously - looked like they had dried oil...
