Re: Night Flying - Airport Lighting
Ya Buttonville is a lot of fun to find at night lol. Look for the black hole with red lights on the buildings around it. Rural airports are a lot easier to see.

Re: Any recommendations for online PTRs?
I've had students coming from other schools who had online PTRs as well. Seems to be an advantage - students and instructors can check on progress at home, less time spent totalling, less errors, can instantly see what hours are required etc. I just have no idea where these services are.

Re: Where is your instructor?!
There's a difference between someone's perception of a good instructor and an actual good instructor. Many look to the bold and daring who push limits to be "masters of the sky" when it's the instructor that teaches good decision making, respecting limits etc. that I'd say is a good instructor. Ther...

Any recommendations for online PTRs?
Just curious what services flight schools are using for Online PTRs, and what people's thoughts / reviews on them are. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for those guidelines, what would you suggest for wind limits for someone with a PPL building time for the CPL?

http://www.aerotraining.com/ - click on the Free Online Exams at the bottom left Every test section has 4 progressively more difficult levels, it forces you to get a 90% or higher on each stage to advance. Great tool. It is older though so be careful if any questions have answers that are no longer ...

Re:
There's a correction thing for projecting onto curved screens just out I spotted looking at http://www.mycockpit.org/forums/ I don't know how much one is to buy or if it would be super difficult to make a curved screen. The next problem would be space. A lot of those setups cost as much as a C150 o...

Re: Frozen flight controls
What about when you put a plane in the hanger and there's still water inside. You can move controls around to let most of it pour out, wipe it down etc. but is there a risk of water on the control cables etc. freezing them in place?

Re: Aviation Book Recommendations
"The Next Hour" by Richard Collins is a good one for safety, you can get it from Sporty's "Aviation Weather" by the FAA is old but a great book for weather, it's published by ASA, you can prob find it at Aviation World, or Aircraft Spruce "Fly the Engine" by Kas Thomas is a great book for better und...

Re: Took a stupid 4 year break during flight training..now w
I had a 6 year break myself. My flight school had me rewrite the PSTAR, and I'd recommend doing the same as you'll need to know everything on it and it's a short test anyways. Given the break I had to redo a lot of my training, and weather kept breaking things up so it took that many more hours too....

Re: Is there any training value in desktop flight sims?
I haven't seen anything in X-Plane with systems modelling anywhere near to what the better FSX payware does. There is however a CRJ in development for X-Plane 9 that is supposed to be PMDG level systems wise. X-Plane uses the blade theory to do flight dynamics, but honestly I find a good FSX payware...

Re: Is there any training value in desktop flight sims?
You can run it on a triple monitor on a single system - Aviation World's Toronto store had one on display for a while. Costs a lot and needs a lot of horsepower though. You can do a full surround view with monitors or projectors with computers networked together running a certain software. Or if you...

Oh and the Redbird Simulator being advertised above this post runs FSX, it runs the commercial variant but it's the same software under a different licensing package.

Re: Is there any training value in desktop flight sims?
The default aircraft don't have the greatest flight dynamics, but the better payware do, and aircraft such as those at the sites I mentioned plus especially the ones from www.realairsimulations.com will do a proper slip etc., and allow for realistic crosswind landings with the correct rudder input e...

Oh and if you watch Ice Pilots this season you'll notice they use Microsoft Flightsim for basic training and procedures. Again not logable time but still valuable for learning - and a lot cheaper.

Re: Is there any training value in desktop flight sims?
I've used Flightsim since 1997 and it's generally been a great help towards my real flying. In my experience most critics are unaware of the advances in the simulators in the past few years. In the end it's all in how you use it. First I want to debunk the reliance on instruments thing. That was tru...

Re: Transferring entries from old logbook to new
I plan to keep both, the written logbook does seem more personal to me if anything, plus considering how important of a record it is 2 copies is a good thing. I plan on just using excel for the electronic logbook. Excel can easily do anything any of the expensive online logbooks do - using formulas ...

Transferring entries from old logbook to new
I picked up one of Aviation World's professional pilot logbooks to replace my original hammond one I've used so far. The hammond one is quite a mess so I'd like to transfer all the entries to the new one. Just curious if there's anything extra I need to do other than just rewrite everything. Should ...

Re: EI paid training??
I tried last year and got a blank stare followed by a no. It really depends on your local office. Where I lived last year the unemployment rate was rather high and they'd only give skills training to people that were without work for over a year and mostly only for trades stuff. Go to your local Ser...

Re: from high to low look out below
Basically if you fly from higher pressure into a lower pressure area your altimeter will think and show the airplane is higher than it really is. When you start your flight set the altimeter to your airports elevation and notice the different pressure reading on it every time. Also you're paying you...

Re: Studying for PPL Written Exam?
For me I read FTGU, the "other" Canadian study book, and a bunch of other books specific to Met, Nav etc. Also read a lot of magazines (just be careful not to get mixed up with FAA regs though!). Prior to the test I did a pile of sample tests here http://www.aerotraining.com/ (click on the link for ...
