Re: Alaska C208 Crash

I read in the Winnipeg Free Press that the ceilings were 300 feet and 1 mile vis. This makes me angry! You have to know they probably weren't flying IFR. Alaska is NOT a place you want to be f*king around in IMC (not that you'd want to anywhere else...).     RIP to th...

According to articles, the captain used to fly for Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. My understanding is that they fly with NVGs. Maybe he just wasn't used to unaided night flying anymore?
No. MNR is a day VFR operation.

Not true, they fly with NVG's regularly.

Been away for a while, I see this thread was pulled for some sniping - otherwise a pretty good read. Keep the civil discussion going... it's a good thread minus the stuff I removed.

Private pilot's flying Biz jets around. Seems like a splendid idea.

Would love to know his hours on type, currency, training, and regularity of flight.

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine

Well, Mao was a little off in that assessment, as the best things in life are not achieved by running with the herd - we both know that. Yes, I fear you are right in terms of changing instruction, but on the positive side of the ledger you don't have to look far to see generally very high quality in...

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine

It just isn't the full story Ok, let's try to keep this simple. I have been told over and over again, by young flight instructors, that they don't have the aircraft handling skills to land a 172 on one wheel, as you would during a crosswind landing. I accept the above as axiomatic. Given that, thes...

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine

STL It is interesting that you talk about "necessary" risk. To me it is obvious that more risk is present when you have actually shut down an engine in a light twin vs setting zero thrust. Yet the training value is exactly the same. If the correct zero thrust power is set the airplane will perform ...

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine

It's about taking unnecessary risks. Ask your insurance underwriter, then get back to us. Doc et al, What are "necessary risks?" I ask, because in thousands and thousands of hours over an extremely wide range of tasks in both airplanes and helicopters, including SAR, Medivacs, and other such applic...

The issue is not the concept.... if you have incompetent people in flight training, therein lies the entire problem du jour. Unless of course the Race to the Bottom is to go unabated.

Sorry Doc,

Gotta say, I'm with Ragbag 100% here. What next, we stop doing flight training altogether and just fly SIMs?

Re: Mountains and Winds

Also not everyone has the luxury of having a turbine engine with huge amounts of thrust directed straight down :) FYI, long before I came to helicopters, I flew Super Cubs, 185's, 206's, Islanders King Air's and others in the mountains every day. It's not what type of engine or flying machine you h...

Re: Mountains and Winds

I'm a little concerned about what I'm reading on this thread. Just to make sure I'm understanding you all properly, this discussion is about flying OVER the mountains, not through them, correct? From what I can see in the posts above it certainly feels that way, and should that be the case, it's NOT...

Re: How not to do mountain flying

my instructor said to keep my feet on the floor, no rudder helped avoid the stall/spin. Does that make sense? I want to shoot myself right now. No. That makes ZERO SENSE. Please keep your limbs attached the controls at all times. Please see above post. Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Sorry ...
