Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

The circling theory does not make sense. An experienced crew that had been there many times before would never circle to that side, or circle in general in CYRB. There is no need for it with good approaches to either runway. Something happened, and the VOR scenario doesn't make much sense either. B...

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

Each side can't track either NAV with the HSI independently to begin with?

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

Nutbutter I think you now understand how that switch works, and more important is that it should be used with a great deal of caution. I could see that switch if turned to the wrong NAV setting would cause both Captain and F/O HSI's to read the VOR instead of the LOC. I have no idea why an airplane...

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

VOR and DME information should be set up on number 2 should it not? The ILS flown on number one, and if completing a straight in, the runway OBS'd on the GPS for the self vector. If you're flying the straight in ILS with the runway OBS'd and you switch to the VOR instead of the LOC, you're going to ...

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

"Last time I checked circuit procedures at VFR airports it was written in the CARs that you have to join from the downwind, or cross midfield. I don't remember it being written that you can join a straight in... In reality people join the circuit from whatever direction is easiest." Check again and...

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

It is very common to do straight in approaches at uncontrolled airports. You can ask various Transport types if it is legal, but if you ask 10 different inspectors, you'll get about 20 different answers as to how legal it is. It's perfectly legal to do a straight in VFR approach at an uncontrolled ...

Re: This week's Maclean's Cover Story

The article is alarmist claptrap. Automation makes it possible to fly advanced aircraft. The only way to achieve safe efficient flight in high speed, high altitude aircraft up against the coffin corner and in tightly defined airspace is to use automation and have the flight crew "manage" the system...

Re: This week's Maclean's Cover Story

Not all pilot error is because of 'stick-and-rudder' errors, I would submit that it rarely is. That's not the point, the point is we shouldn't have any of these at the 705 level. The Dash 8 in Buffalo, and Air France 447 are prime examples. Those were rookie moves. Rookies aren't supposed to be fly...

Re: Nice clean 206 for sale.

The minimum bid is $159,000. From those in the know, and given that this was maintained by the deep pockets of Transport Canada, is this considered to be a good deal? This sounds like a great deal FYI, someone is going to get an awesome airplane (albeit a 206), for that price. Edit: the winning clo...

Re: Nice clean 206 for sale.

550, tip extensions, flaperon kit, copliot door, BAS harnesses, 206's don't get any nicer than that bird. Why you wouldn't just go out and get a 185 though where all the mods aren't necessary, and it still performs better is just beyond me though. The only thing that airplane can do that the 185 can...

Re: This week's Maclean's Cover Story

The solution is not more automation. The solution is a better man machine interface that provides sensory stimulation and feedback and SOP's that require a more hands on approach instead of simply monitoring. Airplanes need to become fun to fly again. Too often do I fly with an individual (usually t...

Re: Resolute Bay Accident - Pilots Discussion Thread

With the availability of a Straight in LOC/BC or GNSS approach to RWY 17 and the crews knowledge and familiarity of local terrain and given a wx report like this, I think the last thing the crew would have been doing is a circling approach to the east towards that hill. If you look at the photo you...
