Re: Looking to Build time

There are plenty of pilots hanging around airports. The Buttonville Flying Club hangs out at the Druxy's at CYKZ every weekend morning. If we're not there, we're probably off flying. It's not that friendly GA doesn't exist in Toronto, you just need to know where to look.

Re: best plane for 4 people

Before you buy a Mooney (regardless of the short/medium/long body length model), try sitting in one, with a friend, with the seats adjusted for reaching the rudder pedals. With 2 "normal" sized males, your shoulders will overlap and all your dreams of speed & efficiency will be shattered with a simp...

Re: Taking PSTAR at 4900 Yonge Street

http://www.flyingstart.ca/FlightTraining/PSTAR/PSTARIndex.htm Every single PSTAR question you can possibly encounter is published (i.e. the entire question bank), so study the test, not the materials. I didn't have to write the PSTAR at TC; I just had it supervised by the instructor. (I don't know i...

That was THIS week, Dan... (As in it was yesterday.)

We also hang-out at the Druxy's at Buttonville on weekend mornings around 9 or 10 am, but a lot of people will be on a group fly-out to DC this weekend.

There's the Buttonville flying club, which is full of great people but it's only a social organization. It doesn't own any aircraft.

I was told it reopened yesterday after changing hands. Thinking of going tomorrow but it'll probably crowded with all the pilots checking it out.

Re: Niagara Falls Tour

My advice is to read the CFS carefully. I've had more than one argument about it. The procedure depicted is for ABOVE the CYR (3500 feet). For whatever reason, people read that the procedure is for within the CYR and enter it, following the procedure. The CYR is restricted. Do not go below 3500. No ...

Re: Great Places to fly to from Toronto

Edenvale has a fantastic restaurant and it's only a 30 minute flight at 100 knots. (Just don't bust the MF that surrounds Borden. It's separate from the CYR there and it's usually not displayed on the GPS database.

Re: C-GJOL Phenom 300 Nov 23 Incident ...

As much as I agree with you on declaring an emergency when you have a problem, in the two incidents where I should have called "Mayday", I didn't. The first time was because it didn't seem that big a problem; I could still maintain level flight. Thinking about it afterwards, I should have called May...

Guess it's the new millennium alright. Make one of your most significant life decisions - the expensive (time and money) start of your education and a career - based on convenience. We all have opinions and in our own minds (mine included) we are all correct. I chose based on convenience. I ...

I have been PM'ed by photofly regarding what I posted on this thread. As I do not have his permission, I will not repost his PM in its entirety here. As he requested, I state that: "I have no first hand knowledge of who the PIC was nor his/her training experience. I do not know of the restrictions t...

Re: Missing north of Peterborough

If they really just got lost, I hate to think the lives were lost for the lack of a GPS. Lack of a GPS is not to blame here.. I'm not going to argue that flying VFR at night, over an area with no lights, with no nav aid, was a good idea. I am saying that a basic, portable GPS would have prevented t...

Re: Missing north of Peterborough

I find this accident really sad and disappointing. Night VFR over un-populated areas is essentially instrument flying and I would never attempt it without a nav aid of some sort. As a low time VFR guy, the fight against the "leans" is very distracting. Couple that with dead reckoning, desperately se...

I wonder if there are any window coatings that might solve this problem? Anyone attend the last TC aviation safety seminar at 4900 Yonge, Toronto? No? They talked about lasers briefly. They also demonstrated "laser glasses" that reflect the light significantly, but apparently messes with the displa...

Re: Bluetooth GPS receiver for iPad mini?

Thanks for the responses. I actually didn't realize that the wifi only iPad Mini had a built-in GPS. It doesn't. It can get location data based on wifi signals, but no GPS. (Before you go out and buy one!) Consensus amongst my group of recreational pilots is that the external gives you more options...

Re: Bluetooth GPS receiver for iPad mini?

I use the Bad Elf external GPS. I just turn it on and leave it in the bag/pocket in Cessnas/Pipers. Cheap and works well. Fast acquisition and good accuracy. Huge battery life and track log capacity. Works with any bluetooth compatible device but you need the iPad to change configuration/download tr...

Carb, I'm a little curious why you want an airplane rated for spins. Are you planning on having it for PPL training? I don't really see any other reason to need a plane that is rated for spinning. Don't get me wrong, when (and where) I was doing my PPL, spins weren't considered "OMFG! Spins are kill...

Re: Flight simulator software for Cessna 172 question

Home flight sims are good for learning how instrument navigation, not much else (and that is arguably getting less and less relevant with everything switching to GNSS RNAV. I'm thinking by the time I've saved enough money for an IFR, every approach will be RNAV, possibly with ILS). They are seriousl...
