Re: Getting my ppl- go direct or in steps

If your goal is a PPL, go for the PPL. Having said that, if you cannot dedicate the time and money to complete the PPL in a year or less you will probably be wasting both if the nearest flight school is 2 hours away. Just to clear up some misconceptions, you cannot fly a certified aircraft at any we...

Dual Signatures

Could someone please point me to the regulatory reference that requires 2 people to sign off certain work (like flight controls)? Non AMO, non commercial, small private aircraft only.

So if I as a member of the public comes forward and tell them I felt unsafe and almost died driving on my way to work, are they going to publish?

Re: Fuel Vent/Leak Issue

I'm assuming you are running Mogas. Without the benefit of dye you are really going to have to apply some differential diagnosis to this problem. List everywhere it could be leaking from, order it from most likely / easiest to test, to least likely / hardest to test, eliminate the impossible ones, a...

Re: Canadian Pilots flying a US airplane in Canada

If you want to operate it under FAA rules, you'll need FAA licences. If you want to operate in Canada with TC licences, it will have to be registered in Canada, have a POC etc etc.

Re: Canadian Pilots flying a US airplane in Canada

As stated there are rules covering this situation and you don't necessarily need an FAA licence, nor do you necessarily need an ATPL. Is it turbine powered pressurized? Carrying passengers?

Re: Open Defects entered at Annual Inspection

I have attached a Type Certificate Data Sheet for a C172. My friend's C172 has a radio installed. Is his C of A valid? I can't find any mention of a radio in the Type Certificate Data Sheet.

Re: Insurance type checkouts-checking out one another

Common issue. They will always ask for a checkout with an instructor, then will always approve a checkout with any specific pilot with time on type. Thing is though, they never specify that the instructor needs any qualifications other than being an instructor. I recently spent 2 weeks arguing with ...

Re: Insurance Requirements

Whoops, I quoted the public liability wrong. I've corrected it now. My insurance company will not sell anything under 1M in any case.

As for the passengers, I'll self insure that. Just wanted to make sure it was legal. Thanks all.

Insurance Requirements

Just renewing my aircraft insurance and would like someone to double check my reading of the CARs:

For a private aircraft under 5000 lbs NO passenger liability insurance is required. Just $500 000 public liability.

Re: Logbook cleanup

I have never re-written any of my books and never had a flight school or operator certify my hours. I took the book and scribbled "all times certified correct" and signed ...

Holding speeds is the maximum allowable IAS in the hold. Depends on altitude. No alt is no alternate. When can you depart without an alternate airport. Sliding scale is a misnomer as you cannot just trade off vis for alt in an algorithmic way. Alternate alternate minima would make more sense but is ...

The idea that we can just pay our COPA dues and magically be protected is a dangerous one. TC will certainly not downgrade a commercial licence to a PPL if you go do a cat 3 medical. They'll simply send you a cat 3 sticker for your commercial licence.

Re: 1956 Cessna 180A

Of those 2 options, the 182 is much cheaper.

There is no such thing as an on condition engine for private aircraft, and good compression doesn't mean much. Get a boroscope inspection and ideally a history of oil sampling.

With the state of NOTAMs today, I don't think anyone can be blamed for missing one. The system is a complete disaster. There are way too many NOTAMs, and they are written in a cryptic format that hasn't made sense for 50 years.
